Jesus Christ. I'm normally not one for hyperbole, but it really seems like there's a War on Citizens being waged by the police.

I used to work as a paralegal for a criminal defense firm in Ft. Myers, and so we would get plenty of calls from people angry at the local po-po...
one day a guy called saying the police beat him mercilessly, and then laughed because the room they used had no cameras. They taunted the guy by saying "good luck proving any of this!"
I completely thought he was a nutjob at the time, but this article really makes me feel like he might have been telling the truth.
/ft. myers is in lee county
/what else do you expect from a county named after a rebel leader?

No criminal charges filed against any law enforcement or jail authorities.
How long are we going to stand for this kind of nonsense? How many stories and videos of police abuse must we see before something is finally done about it? My suggestion to law enforcement agencies everywhere is that they had better start cleaning their own houses, punish rule breakers, fire bad apples and get back to public service while they have the chance to do it voluntarily.

Motherfarking cops.
If you don't believe the Mail, as many people don't, you can google the guys name and come up with similar articles at a number of more reputable news outlets.
We give these farking sadists power over us and they become unaccountable for any of their transgressions.
The saddest and funniest line was that the death was ruled a homicide but an
internal
investigation cleared the cops who did this of any wrong doing.
This is one of those things that could easily happen to anyone. They murdered this guy and nothing is going to happen to the cops who did it.
MOTHERfarkING COPS
I can't wait to read what the local cop apologists have to say.

I used to work down there, they have 24 hours mental health facilities (Ruth Cooper, DLC, and Willough) within very close proximity. If this man was legitimately mentally unstable, which is not hard to diagnose, he should have been placed there. There's NO reason not to because we would receive patients like that at all hours of the night from the police when the jail's couldn't handle them.
This is BS, I hope the family bankrupts them and the perpetrators should have to endure this daily for their 20 years sentences.

Sadly, you're right. My point is that right now, police departments have the chance to fix these problems before certain groups out there start fight back. Whether or not the police want to admit it, they are heavily out-gunned and with a shiat load of veterans out there, police are also out-trained.
We know the politicians will never do anything about it, so it's left up to the citizens.

sounds like another case of a mentally ill person nobody wanted to take responsibility for.
I think my husband is mentally unstable so i'll let him go to Florida to go drinking with his brother.
Oh my mentally unstable husband got arrested good i sure hope they take him to the hospital.
What my mentally unstable husband got abusive with the police and needed to be restrained to the point where he was spitting at them and needed to be repeatedly pepper sprayed? I take no responsibility i'll just sue.
FU you are lucky ( and i bet relieved) he is dead so you don't have to pretend to deal with him anymore.

Slap a turban on this guy and replace 'police' with 'soldiers' and you'd have probably a dozen guys all up for a life-no-parole sentence at America's choicest military prison. Just regular FL cops torturing some guy? We'll go ahead and get a few of our boys to sit on the 'investigation committee' and whitewash that for ya, Lou.

An internal investigation concluded there no wrongdoing on the part of any Lee County deputy.
What a shock that an "internal investigation" would find that.
I realize that cops deal with a lot of bad people, but how do you not have at least a little compassion for an old guy with mental problems? Especially since they were already aware of his condition.
And good for that trainee deputy who actually testified to what he saw. He's probably going to get roasted for that by his co-workers, assuming that he isn't just summarily fired.

There is a
much more exhaustive article
at HuffPo about this case.
The state's attorney looked at the case and determined that there was insufficient evidence for state criminal charges, and that the case would be better handled by either criminal or civil action in the federal courts. But the US Attorney doesn't seem to be interested in filing criminal charges either. So the federal lawsuit was the only remaining option.

Next door Collier County no better. I had a terrifying run in with Collier Sheriff's Dept when I was a youngster. Was with a black friend from Atlanta and we get pulled over for nothing (said we didn't signal the turn) and they planted drugs on my friend. We were roughing it in those days, so by our appearance and car we looked like easy entertainment, but our families had some juice and everything got dropped but the lawyers told us to forget trying to sue for planting drugs and torturing us (dislocating our thumbs after cuffed) unless we wanted some unsolved murder or something hung on us.
We got out of it because our people could afford to help us and those deputies were stupid as they come. They plant an empty pack of cigarettes with marijuana in it on my friend but drug screening showed neither of us smoked weed or tobacco. PI showed that exactly those types of cigarettes were smoked by one of the deputies. No prints on pack. Four dislocated thumbs hard to explain too. They also "found" gay porno magazines in the car, lol. No prints of ours on those either.
Our lawyers had to make noise about going to Feds before it got dropped. Prosecutor HAD to know it was BS but was still intent on nailing us. Cost almost forty grand to make that shiat go away.
These cops are good at guessing which people probably don't have the standing and money to come back on them. There are some good cops out there, probably in Mongolia or something.
