Vladmir Putin picks me up in a black Escalade and we speed through Moscow as he regales me with tales of the Cold War. He has recently gone through a break-up and is feeling vulnerable.
We arrive at a palatial mansion on the Baltic Sea. He cooks me dinner...shirtless. He sets out huge plates for the food, but when he is done cooking, all he has are these tiny purple scallops that he has painstakingly plated.
As we eat, the conversation gets kind of awkward. I notice a wedding party on the shore taking pictures and he explains that he allows weddings on his property to offset the cost of the mansion.

You don't need skill when your opponents are too busy checking the rafters for a KGB sniper.

I'm going to say a tribute to Hunter S. Thompson... Could be wrong, though.

I think we've answered the Putin/Harper summit series debate. I can't find footage of Harper skating, but Putin's not very strong on his skates. Harper having played hockey as a kid surely can skate better than that. Putin would have a tough time keeping up with the Timbits.
That said - good for Putin - It's a fun game that's easily played into later life.
/ Still play fat old guy hockey

Say what you want about Putin, but he's probably one of the MANLIEST leaders in the world. He plays sports, fights, hunts, fishes, etc. He makes most guys look like complete pussies.

Putin's image is a product of extremely carefully managed propaganda and complete control over media in Russia. The target of this propaganda are not westerners like but the Russian people. And its success allows Putin to get away with terrible things. That is not something that should be celebrated.

Just because it happens in other places doesn't make Putin's actions NOT terrible.
People who are not suspicious of people with a cult of personality are ignorant and refuse to learn from the past.

This is how the world works. Bill Clinton was connected with more than 50 people that were either murdered or died suspiciously. Those Russians must really be stupid to allow such a monster to remain in power (or maybe it's just not as bad as you believe it to be). Like him or not, Putin has led Russia to relative prosperity.

I've said it before, this guy needs to get out of politics and into televsion.
The comedy gold that this guy and Berlusconi would produce in a reality show or sitcom would be epic.

Compare this chart (price of petroleum):
Or more simply take a look at this nice little chart:
Russia's economy is fuelled (pun intended ;)) by petroleum/natural gas (directly accounting for somewhere around 25% of the entire GDP,). As prices rise, the countries GDP rose. To give credit to Putin for that is silly.

Can't stand the "b-b-but they do it too" rebuttal. It doesn't qualify as any kind of counter-argument.

I'm in no way saying it's right. Remember ol' chap, this isn't in the politics thread. Didn't think we were in debate class either. Just pointing it out before the "foreign nations = bad" people start pounding their chest while shating out U.S. flags. Dickbags come in many different shapes and colors from all over the globe.
