From TFA:

According to a report from the Associated Press (AP), Dr Nir Barzilai, whose team conducts resveratrol research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, says Das is not a major player in the field.

Barzilai told AP lots of labs around the world are conducting extensive research into resveratrol, with encouraging results, and the new allegation will not make a material difference.

How is having a whistleblower evidence of effective oversight?

Don't panic. All they're saying is that ONE ASPECT of how it's good for you isn't actually a factor, good or bad.

It is still good for you in many other ways.

Like it sits there at the end of your work day telling you "I am here waiting for you... but if you punch that dipshiat in marketing who keeps calling you for help with his powerpoint presentation you will get sent to jail and I won't be waiting for you any more."

For example.

Nothing wrong with enjoying scotch. I like scotch too. But it's ignorant to claim that every whisk(e)y that isn't scotch is crap. There are a lot of high quality bourbons, Irish whiskey, and even Japanese whiskey out there. Dismissing them based on their country of origin seems incredibly limiting in your boozing adventures.

Peer reviewers have a few weeks to read the manuscript and submit their critiques. It's not like they try to replicate the all the experiments described during that time.

It's not necessarily easy to spot falsified results. If there are no obvious logical inconsistencies, and the findings don't blatantly contradict previously published findings, then how could you tell? the answer is, probably you can't, until the day that somebody does try to reproduce those results for whatever reason, and finds out that they can't.

The same way in which "the system worked" (new window) when a bomber got through and had to be subdued by his fellow airline passengers.

Peer-reviewing is not a border checkpoint. It's not designed to weed out intentional fraud. Mostly, it's designed to ensure that any honest mistakes, misconceptions, or omissions can be corrected before publishing, and/or to generate a discussion of the findings that will lead to further research.

It's still important to have another team replicate the results. If they can't, then we can start to look closer at the original findings, and figure out why they couldn't be replicated. That's when fraud is usually detected.

I really wish the media focused more on the result replication aspect of research than the peer-reviewed aspect.
