Anti_illuminati: Al Franken, the supposed Knight of Internet Freedom, is a sponsor (new window) of this bill.

F*ck him.

*shrugs*

Maybe he'll get voted out...and Bachmann in. That would be awesome, wouldn't it?

A_Listless_Wanderer: CravenMorehead: Oh look, something about SOPA on Fark. When is Fark gonna do something about this bill? Reddit is going dark for a day in protest. Why isn't Fark speaking out and doing something about it?

I love empty gestures. They make me feel like I'm DOING SOMETHING!

You think Reddit's blackout is an empty gesture?

The SOPA bill is one of those where republicans and democrats come together to screw over the citizenry they supposedly work for.

Everything's an empty gesture that should be ignored until you get into really massively disruptive direct actions, at which point it's lawless violence that should be suppressed.

It's an easy way to be completely intellectually lazy and justify not doing anything helpful, and at the same time feel superior to those who do.

This is why I am not impressed with bipartisanship. By and large, the best (or least worst) laws come from Democrats, then much worse stuff comes from Republicans, but the absolute most heinous, bottom-of-the-barrel, overtly criminal bullshiat is stuff with "broad bipartisan support".

It's the same with red light cameras, is there 1 person in the united states who is not being bribed that thinks they are a great idea? But yet we have them all.over.the.farking.place.

/Because it's what comes to mind when I hear his name.

Oh my god. My 4 year old son is just getting into Star Wars. He loves R2 and HATES Jarjar. We play the Lego games together and every time we get Jarjar he whines, in that complaining tone that connotes disappointment, "not jar jar!"

I couldn't be more proud.

Also, he's got a huge crush on Aayla Secura (new window)

So where do I sign up for this newsletter that I'll just place on my coffee table and never bother to read?

In a world where I can highlight a word in a post, right click and instantly wiki or google search it, nothing is obscure.

Issa has been out against this for a couple of months, as have a number of others. In fact I'm almost positive the Issa-Wyden OPEN Act was mentioned on Fark previously.

coco ebert: Normally I would be happy with this but from what I've read Issa is one piece of sh*t corrupt pol. There must be something he's not personally benefiting from if this legislation goes through.

Maybe he pirates a lot of movies.

Reddit will also be posting a list of representatives and their phone numbers that day in lieu of their normal website. They are also encouraging everyone to call and voice their opinion about SOPA/PIPA that day. That's not just an empty gesture.

An excellent question. I, for one, would seriously like to know how Drew (All hail Supremor) feels about this?

/No troll, serious question.
//Call your elected officials and tell them how you feel about this bill.
///I did.

Because going dark for a day is absolutely useless?

Guidette Frankentits: Not surprised that Franklin is for SOPA. He worked in the entertainment industry.

It's FranKEN, like in your name, not FranKLIN. The way I remember is that in SNL days, he accused Frankenberry cereal of being based on him,. He said the top of the Frankenstein's head was based on his butt. Can't find the video, but here's a pic.

The other way of remembering is to think of Halle Berry as his running mate:

heinekenftw: Issa is a piece of shiat but if he's getting payed by Google et al to vote against SOPA, that works for me.

It may be dishonest, but whatever kills SOPA . . .

Darrell Issa has largely gotten elected because of his own net wealth. If there is a play here (and it is entirely possible that he is acting based on his personal beliefs), the play is that he is positioning himself for a run in either the Senate or more likely for Governor of California after Jerry Brown retires.

A more exciting (but rediculous) theory is that he is supporting SOPA to antagonize Hollywood Jews because his office was the target of a bomb plot by the JDL in 2001 and he is Lebanese.
