Exactly. I don't understand half the shiate our kids watch/listen to and it all sounds like a grating noise to me, but then again I remember my mom making us walk out of the movie "Strange Brew" as a kid. Parent just don't understand.

Per "The Princess Bride" FTA:Really? You have to ask why your kids should see this amazing movie? The fact that they haven't seen this film is evidence of neglect on your part.

Inconceivable.

Not if you have taste or a remotely sophisticated sense of humor...

Your childhood was better than their childhood, so you're already a total failure.

I don't even know what the truffle shuffle and what a Mogwai is. Chances of me passing any knowledge of that to my kids, if I have any, is effectively zero.

People have different tastes in movies. My co-worker told me he hadn't seen the movie mainly because he found its title off-putting, but I think we've convinced to watch it at least once.

I had a friend once who had never watched that movie. Low 20's. She watched it 8 more times that week.

I let my kids do their thing, but when it's movie night with me and them, I sometimes put a movie on from my childhood. They all hold true. My kids love each and every one of them. My daughter watches old episodes of Ninja Turtles and The Super Mario Bros Show on her own all the time. My son loved Voltron. And the Goonies. They really love the Gonnies.

My father made me watch movies from the '40s-'60s, and I am a better man because of it. My kids will watch the '80s classics. And probably a few of those ones from the '40s-'60s as well. Eight off the top of my head that my dad showed me that everybody should see:

"Some Like It Hot"
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"
"Casablanca"
"How The West Was Won"
"Dr. Strangelove"
"2001: A Space Odyssey"
"The Great Escape"
"The Caine Mutiny"

They all kick tremendous amounts of ass.

Kids today, liking their new music, and cartoons, and movies, and toys!!!

Although if I hear "Let it RIP!!" in that high squeaky voice from Beyblade one more time....

Goonies, Princess Bride and Indiana Jones my kids have all seen.

They're still too young for Predator and Caddyshack. And for some reason, it's hard as hell to find a copy of Gremlins and Willow around here. Need to Netflix them, I guess

If your children don't know what a truffle shuffle is, or why "Hey You Guys!" elicits cheers, then they need to see this movie.

You mean like from The Electric Company (new window)?

I first saw it on a field trip (somewhere more than 2 hours away). The teacher took a vote and of course all the girls raised their hand for The Princess Bride. None of the guys (except the few that had seen it) raised their hand, but since there were more girls than boys they won. I loved it after that and decided I wouldn't judge a movie based on the title alone anymore.

So not only is it a great movie, it teaches you a good lesson on not judging a book by its cover.

Check the $5 bin at Walmart. That's where I found Willow, which my kids love.

Gremlins too, but I left it there. I never really liked the first one. I did like Gremlins 2 though.

I have a friend who absolutely detests Princess Bride. Another friend & I made him watch it and he still doesn't understand why people think it's funny. He just thinks it's stupid--too stupid to even be considered a parody. He also hates Monty Python & Kids in the Hall, so go figure.

I feel the same way about The Big Lebowski.

I have half of those movies in my collection( 1, 2, 3, and 5). I never got into Willow and Karate Kid has been on TV so much lately I won't need to buy it since we've seen it half a dozen times in the last couple of months.

/They should have listed Stand By Me.

Meh. I've seen Big Lebowski and really don't get the love either.

We have movie night every Sunday. Pick a different movie no one has seen, so we generally pick older ones the kids wouldn't have watched before, that's how mine know about Goonies, Gremlins, etc.
People are saying let kids have their own, but I think it's important to show them what came first. To respect the way films were made using almost no technology like easy CGI today.
Not fluff and trash like most films today. Good, solid movies people cared about. Films that can last longer than the 3 weeks they're in the theaters. Films you can quote for years.
/Now excuse me, I have to go find my copy of Porkey's.

GAT_00: Let your children have their own culture.

They should have the choice, but not all generations are equal. Heck, I enjoy watching movies that were before my time, largely because a lot of them are better than what we have now. I was maybe 7 years old when Reservoir Dogs came out, but watched it again last night for the umpteenth time and loved it.

Sure, your success as a parent is measured by how many/what movies your children have seen.

Thanks to The 4:30 Movie, I've seen all of those. List is missing The Longest Day, though.

I've seen all but Princess Bride, and I've seen quite a few bits and pieces of that one. Don't know if I'm the right type to enjoy it really, although there's a few decent parts that I've seen.

Predator is debatable for me, I'm not sure if my kid is quite ready to see that one quite yet, same with Caddyshack. He's only 9, so I think he can wait a few years.

I will have to try and get him to sit down long enough to at least watch Goonies, the original Karate Kid (he did like the remake), and Willow though.

I have another friend who had never watched Holy Grail. Her (now) husband and I made her watch it. She didn't get why it was funny, and doesn't believe that it will get better the more times she watches it, never mind how many times we've told her that it will.
