2wolves: How's SDI working out?

Pretty good, actually. Since the switch to digital broadcasting, pretty much every TV station uses SDI. Similarly, film distribution to cinemas is on the downturn as more movie theaters switch to digital distribution and digital projectors... SDI comes in handy there.

/What?

FTA: "Brian Almquist, the Navy's program officer for GREMLIN, explains that the sensors will use an "acoustic source, something that makes noise" to vibrate a patch of turf that military explosive experts suspect might hide a buried bomb."

How the hell can you say that's a good thing? First we have good old Standard Definition SDI, which we used to call D1 (which is really the name of a tape format) and then later called 601 and now we call 656. Then yay! Everything gets fixed and we get high-definition 709 SDI! We're all saved! Except oops we don't have enough bandwidth for 1080p, so we need 3G SDI to carry that. But we're fracking lazy so we'll encode 1080p as a pair of 1080i streams in 3G SDI. Three different standards and we end up with a kludge?

And don't get me started on the new "trilevel" HD reference signal which doesn't even work for 720p!

Never let accuracy get in the way of a good joke.

/Or a bad one, for that matter.

GREMLIN - an acronym for Ground-Based Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Laser Interrogation...

Did you ever get the feeling that the DoD comes up with a cool acronym first then designs everything else around it?
