Vangor: Massachusetts moderate who's pro-gun control, pro-choice, pro-tax increase, pro-liberal judge

No one is "pro-tax increase". This is not a position. Maybe you raise taxes in order to pay down the debt or rather than reducing or closing services, but saying "pro-tax increase" is meaningless except when the political scene has devolved into actions believed to be wrong by nature of the action rather than outcome, which Newt is contributing to.

Further, who is "pro-liberal judge"? What a farcical comment to make. This is not a negative except when "liberal" is a negative, and therefore could be the same comment with "liberal" appended to anything. Mitt is "pro-liberal chicken sandwich" is as negative.

At least be negative with some sense.

When your target audience is stupid, you don't need to make sense. You only need to use words that scare them.

Has no one considered that Newt is basically doing for Romney what Hillary [ultimately] did for Obama? Basically you empty the magazine on your rival and see if they still stand. If they are, great. If they buckle, then they would have lost in the general election to those same attacks anyway. Bonus is that you get certain news cycles over with.

The last 3-4 months of Hillary v. Obama was basically her blunting all the potential Republican attacks. People don't care too much about stuff they'd heard before. By the time the general rolled around, Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers were old news that voters were tired of hearing about and even the sensationalist media was tired of covering.

Politicians not "going negative" is like two crack addicts trying to not do crack.

"My opponent and I have our differences sure, but one thing I hope we can agree on is that the campaign doesn't resort to negative attack ads."

"Negative attack ads? Who said anything about negative attack ads? I want to keep this campaign positive too!"

"Did you just say negative attack ads twice?"

"That's twice you've used the term negative attack ads! Why are you so fixated on this?"

"THAT'S IT!"

"GLOVES OFF!"

I don't care about his reasons; the simple fact that Newt is doing this is shedding some very untimely light in places the GOP wanted to remain quite hidden, and for that I will say Newt has finally proven himself useful to the future of the country.

ironically...by going as negative as he possibly can.

indylaw: Newt must know that he most likely won't win the nomination, and if he can't win the nomination, he's going to poison the anointed candidate by hitting him where the Democrats will make their most concerted attacks. Best case scenario for Newt - Romney is torpedoed in future primary contests and Newt's chances at the nomination improve. Worst case, Newt at least get revenge.

Oh, for sure.

Newt wants to be the guy, but like a 2-13 team playing its last game of the season, sometimes playing spoiler saves your ego (and, as you say, positions him as "the also ran from 2012" rather than "the guy we booted out of Congress for being a total dick").

Newt cares far more about himself than about the Party, and far more about the Party than he cares about the country.

And I quote:

"Mitt Romney.    Was he a job creator or a corporate raider? That's the question this film answers. And it's not pretty. Mitt Romney was not a capitalist during his reign at Bain. He was a predatory corporate raider. His firm didn't seek to create value. Instead, like a scavenger, Romney looked for businesses he could pick apart. "

So Romney did to companies what the GOP wants to do to the government?

It doesn't take a conspiracy for a PAC to figure out that attacking the front runner might help their guy.
