You get handed gems like "oarfish," "billfish," and "dealfish", and THAT is the best HL you can come up with?

*sigh*

Wouldn't you think the aquatic world may be like the world above water? Some weird-ass fugly humanoids out there too. I'm sure that if many of you farkers were flopping around on a beach somewhere no-one would know what to call you either.

Oarfish have a much cooler name in Japanese meaning "Messenger from the Palace of the Dragon King".

"When oarfish do wash up, they usually have a hole in their sides, Waldner said. That's because the ribbon-shaped fish are often gored through the side by billfish."

This is too easy.

Some nerd in the comments nailed it: Radiicephalus elongatus.

Wait... wut? ...phalus elongatus?

Commonly known as the Trouser Fish.

Up to 56 feet? Sweet mother of pearl, just when I get comfortable getting back in the ocean they throw something like this into the mix.

I'm skeptical. If this really is an Oar fish where are the little hands that he rows with?

They are supposed to be inedible. Must be related to the Fillet-O-Fish.

well i really hope you like swimming around 5000+ ft down. the oarfish is typically only seen by humans when one dies or is dying. their life is spent in the deep deep sea.

thing is almost every time scientists go deep they find new species. there is a lot down there and most of it has never been seen by humans, most of it never will.

I do. The boys on the surf circuit call me bathysphere. Either way the prospect of tangoing with a dead or dying 56 foot oarfish doesn't really hold much appeal to me.

Really? I'd honestly give my left foot for that chance. They're harmless filter-feeders and they're gorgeous. Quite possibly my favourite fish in the sea.

/Oarfish are oarsome.
//Groan.

Just saying... if we could fry it, Red Lobster would be leading the world in deep sea exploration.

These are neat but I like Mola Molas slightly better. That things makes you queasy because you wonder what took its back half off.
