It's not the beard on the outside that counts. It's the beard on the inside.

So some Amish were isolating them because "they should be ashamed of themselves for the way they were treating Mullet and his community". So his family went out and assaulted the members of their community.

I don't care what religion you are. Humans don't do that.

Yes, there are Canadian Amish, although they prefer to be called Ehmish

You might be right, if Humans weren't tribalistic animals.

But we are (unless you've passed the Gom Jabbar of course).

Funny, I somehow seem to suppress my actions of violence when confronted with another human who I feel has slighted me. Do you not have the ability to do that?

You, sir, have offended my dignity. I challenge you to a duel - pistols at 10 paces.

Actually, the Amish aren't generally poor. They sell things but pay very few bills - it lets them keep more of their money within their community.

Here's an example: Link (new window)

If you don't even have a refrigerator or a cell phone, you're poor no matter what your bank balance says.

Uh, no, you aren't. If you don't have much money or many tangible assets, you're poor. That's the definition. There's no requirement for certain specific material goods. I wouldn't want to live without a fridge or mobile phone, but I'm not dumb enough to believe that they are determinants of wealth when all the poor people I know have both.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. It's one thing to be poor, it's another to be so poor you don't even have the basics.

Money, land, businesses, homes, buggies, dry goods, food....not much, I guess.

Meh, the homeless guy that lives in my neighborhood park (land) in a cardboard box (home) collects cans (business) in his shopping cart (buggy) to buy seeds (dry goods) to feed the pigeons (food). He doesn't have a fridge though.

Everything they want/need to maintain their ideal desired lifestyle?

Sure you can look down on them for turning their backs on most modern consumerism, but for the most part they make enough to sustain the community.

Exactly. Among the words I know to describe most of the Amish/Mennonites I've seen, "Poor" or "impoverished" don't generally come to mind.

First of all my credentials: I spent a day in Lancaster County, did the Amish Buggy Ride, and watched a short film about the Amish, and ate some Shoo Fly Pie.
I have also watched Witness a couple of times.

Now, based on the farms I saw. If they were to actually sell one of those farms, I know my middle class ass wouldn't be able to afford the mortgage.
Of course, I like to spend money on shiat that takes electricity, so that sucks away a good part of my budget.

Correct. Mustaches were stylish when the Amish movement started, so they were verboten.

I guess you could say that the Amish were the first Hipsters...

You know, taking a picture of an Amish individual is considered deeply offensive too. Something about stealing part of the soul. Just some irony there.
