Drummers who can't keep time, guitarists who can't do anything other than 16th note riffs, and vocalists who scream.

I would mention Ace Combat, but they follow the trends so closely that I'm more than sure the next game will have an all-dubstep soundtrack. They nailed the "Top Gun" aesthetic but once, and then never again.

DrBenway: I see this as a good thing. An interlude of lowered interest in guitar music coupled with a dodgy economy means prices for awesome old guitars will plummet. Theoretically, anyway. And while I don't need any more guitars, I could be tempted in such a circumstance.

It's been a buyers market for a while. If it becomes more so, I will need new and creative ways to justify my acquisitions to my wife.

I'm a lifelong guitar nerd and HUGE metalhead; up until recently heavily involved in my city's music scene. Metal is alive and well, and I have never in my life seen as many young kids eager to shred as I do now. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because gear is cheaper and more easily available now. You can go to any Guitar Center and come out with a playable guitar and a little practice amp for under $400. The point is, there is a whole new generation of young-ass kids that really want to play their guitars and putting in the time and effort to get good at it. It's incredible.

Who else read that as "Donuts Raised Over the Future of Guitar Music?" It made me think that there was some sort of glorious telethon going on.

My 16 year old son told me yesterday that he's getting tired of all of the d-bags (his word) at school walking around trying to play guitar. His best friend is an amazing classical player and I told him he's spoiled by having a friend, and a dad, who can actually play. He smirked as only a 16 yr. old goth kid can and went back to listening to Cradle of Filth.

One thing I've noticed about he and his friends are that they don't have a musical identity of their own, for the most part they all like and listen to music from before they were born. Every once in a while I'll hear them listening to something I haven't heard before and I'll inquire. I was really hoping that they would be a new source of music to listen to. I guess they're still a little too young.

Musicians have a penchant for incorporating instruments (random sounds, effects and samples) they percevce as foreign to their music (IMO as an attempt to sounds different). This has the effect of reviving sounds perceived as "old" often in a new way.

There is an expressability in strings that cannot be duplicated in any other musical class. Guitars are unique and different from classical stringed instruments in their expreassability. I don't see their nich ever being completely removed or replaced. Sure new instruments and style will come, but I don't think we'll ever see anything eliminate guitar from music completely.

But if it helps you sleep at night, take comfort in your ignorance.

LOL - I'm ignorant for pointing out that musical instrument styles have changed in the last 1000 years. It looks like you saved up that rant for subby and then unloaded it on me without actually reading my post.

Browse your local Craigslist for musicians some time. Guitarists are no prob, but try finding a drummer! Also, I find it increasingly hilarious to see ads citing 90s alt-rock bands as influences, yet they don't want anyone older than 22 or so in the band. Seriously? We lived and grew up playing that music when it was fresh. Do something new young people!
