I read this, "The researchers also found a slightly larger relative, Paedophryne swiftorum," as, "The researchers also found a slightly larger relative, Paedophryne santorum."

That is truly cool, not just the smallest frog but the smallest vertebrate.
I wondered at first if they were immature but the article indicates they found them by mating calls. Wonder what their prey is? At that size anything they eat would be big enough to eat them

We use only the finest baby frogs, dew-picked and flown from New Guinea, cleansed in the finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and then sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope, and lovingly frosted with glucose.

I've lived in Florida nearly all of my life. As a kid, I'd visit my grandparents who lived in a rural area where they were the only house on an undeveloped block.

The blocks in front of and behind them were also empty and wooded.

The lot next door had a large 'meadow' in it that mildly flooded when it rained -- meaning among the wild grasses, the white sand had about a half inch of water on it. I loved the place. At certain times during the summer, seemingly right after a rain, the meadow would swarm with these frogs about as large as your little fingernail.

I don't think they were fresh from tadpoles, since none had that little tail stub that remains for a bit and rarely did the meadow stay flooded for more than a few days.

They would be all over the place in the hundreds. As a kid I found it charming and fascinating.

Now, the entire area is massively developed and I haven't seen one of those 'Fly Frogs' (as we called them) in years.

It was a sight to see.

They ought to name it Herveus Villechaizius.

I've probably inadvertently stepped on a few of those in my day.

And then one time I took the tadpoles to school in my scooby-doo lunch box. I sold them to other kids for a nickle apiece. I made three dollars. 200 tadpoles died. In my lunchbox. In the sun.

They "discovered" a frog -- that makes a lot of noise at night?

Yeah, I'm going to have to call BS on the author's use of the word "discovered." I'd bet $20 that local folks have known about these little frogs for ages.

Sure, but they probably called it "liklik rokrok" and most likely did not distinguish it from the myriad of other "liklik rokrok" hopping around. Hell, most likely they erroneously deemed it a "pikinini rokrok". So the scientists should get a little credit.

I'm not knocking the scientists here, it sounds like interesting work. My beef is with the author of this article's choice of words. It's sort of like saying Columbus "discovered" America. It was new to him, sure -- but plenty of other people already knew about it.

Forgive the following lapse in my usual snarky decorum:

AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I WANT I WANT IWANTIWANTIWANT!

I haz frogs, but the damn things are monstrous!www.pangeareptile.comi1222.photobucket.comAlmost an inch long! Terrifyingly huge!

I would love me a passel of gnat-frogs. I wonder what their mating calls sound like. I already have buzzing and barking and chirping, but no condom frogs yet. I want some dart frogs too, but when I mentioned them to the landlord he yelled and kind of pooped himself a bit so I don't think he likes the idea. Too bad. They so purty.

/dart frogs, not landlord poops
