How exactly do they pull this off when the countries that have to bail Greece out yet again are drowing in their own debt? How many Western European countries have had their sovereign credit ratings downgraded recently or are on watch for a downgrade?

Where are the systemeic changes that Europe needs to pull out of this? Otherwise it is giving more money to the homeless guy at the intersection to buy more beer, not get into treatment.

But don't blame socialism for this, or else you're racist.

Getting into treatment to what? This is a systemic flaw of unfettered capitalism.

Greek Bank rescues needs "tens of billions" more

No less accurate.

The Greeks cooked their books (with some help from Goldman Sachs) and banks were dumb enough to keep lending them money. Why should bankers and investors get off scot-free while Greek citizens alone are made to eat shiat sandwiches?

Why does Greece need this much? What are they going to do with it?

Serious question.

The problems with Greece and most of the other troubled European economies is pretty much the opposite of "unfettered capitalism." Greece is crashing and burning because the government has to pay out incredible amounts of "free" pension and social support money, without a tax base anywhere near big enough to fund it.

By your statement you are implying that socialism is flawed and contributed to the Euro crisis. This makes you racist.

Considering you can get pension benefits for being a pedophile, compulsive gambler or nudist, this doesn't surprise me.

20 hour work week, retirement at 47, free health and education for everyone. Cant wait to try that here.

I wonder when Germany and the other non-profligate countries will realize how badly they're getting played. Right now they seem to be saying, "well, after all this money we're pot committed." How many rebuys will they put into the same crap hand?

Because Greek citizens haven't been paying their taxes (~ 30% of their GDP is unreported income) as a matter of course...to such a degree that they wouldn't have a fiscal crisis if they'd simply paid their taxes when they should have.

I don't object to the Greeks having to sleep in the beds they made, I object to the banks stealing the mattresses but facing no consequences.

Exactly. They've captured the entire political and regulatory system solely with an eye to preventing bondholders from ever taking losses. Risk is for little people.

And that's just the beginning. If Europe is kicking and screaming and can barely scrape together a few lousy billion euros, wait till France and Italy and Spain have to meet their bubble payments.

Where the hell is Italy's broke ass going to come up with $140 billion Euros by April?

Bye bye, Euro.

Greece's creditors will write off more than HALF of Greece's debt. Because as bad as that sounds for them, the alternative would suck even more. A new Greek drachma would plummet in value overnight, wiping out most of their holdings.

You know the old saying, if you owe the bank millions, then the bank has a problem. It applies to Euro governments as well as to anyone else.

That doesn't answer how to handle the rest of the PIIGS.

Their creditors have much of the same problems as Greece's, only there's more of them.
Have them write off enough debt that those countries have room to breathe and can reform their governments. This is the best (as in, least bad) solution for everyone.
If any of these governments can't, or won't play along (because their people won't let them), then kick them out of the Euro like the cancers they have become. Germany and the rest will do this because it's still tons better for them to kick out the rabble than it is to scrap the Euro altogether (again, better = least bad considering what's available).

Anyway no matter how many countries do end up leaving the Euro (if any), the currency itself was due to lose some of its value. This will help both the Eurozone and the EU as a whole in the long run.

2012-01-12 09:02:01 AM
Italy and Spain owe too much to write down. It can't be done without collapsing Europe.

2012-01-12 09:05:07 AM
Subby mean the IMF needs billions more in order to let Greece continue to exist.

/Nice little country, be a shame if something happened to it...

2012-01-12 09:12:39 AM
If you collapse the Euro (assuming that's what you meant), you will get even less if any of those countries owe you money.
If some countries are kicked out it will be because Germany et al will have decided that they can't rely on them to play fair in the future, and that they are more trouble than they're worth.

Okay who's doing the shorting around here? I could almost set my clock to the weekly "Euro is going under" report on Thursday. This report is followed by the "Euro is going to be okay" report on Monday.... Been going on for the last 3 months.

What makes me think that as they dump money in, that bankers are soaking it up and going "executive bonuses all around!"?

Exactly. the culture of Greece is 'gimme gimme', without being willing to pay the necessary taxes. This has nothing to do with capitalism.

Greece is a lost cause, and Germany knows this but throwing them out and letting them default on their debt would just cause lenders and investors to flee from the better but still risky countries like Spain, Italy, and Belgium, causing them to go down as well. So they keep trying to band-aid over the problem and hope it goes away.
