As long as it has stadium seating and an icee machine, I'm set.

Fails to compare. The Alamo Drafthouse (new window)

Does your theater have a strict policy on being quiet, and no cell phones?
Does your theater have a beer menu?
Does your theater serve Thai Chicken Noodle Salad?
Will they bring ice cream to your seat?
Does Quentin Tarantino show up to host Spaghetti Westerns?
When's the last time you had a Muppet Sing-a-long?
Did you get a golden ticket in a bar of chocolate when Willy Wonka was shown?
Do they host a "Road Show" at the location of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and serve BBQ?
Maybe they showed Deliverance at the end of a canoe trip, and had the guy there who says "Squeal Like a Pig" on sight for autographs and photos?
Goonies in a Cave?
Nasfurato at the Cemetery?
Close Encounters AT Devil's Tower?

I didn't think so.

Fails to compare. The Alamo Drafthouse (new window)

Does your theater have a strict policy on being quiet, and no cell phones? Yes
Does your theater have a beer menu? Yes and wine and liquor
Does your theater serve Thai Chicken Noodle Salad? Not entirely sure
Will they bring ice cream to your seat? Not that I know of. But, the staff will feed your parking meter for you.
Does Quentin Tarantino show up to host Spaghetti Westerns? Not yet
When's the last time you had a Muppet Sing-a-long? I think it was after the longest running showing or Rocky Horror. Bring rice. There's a wedding.
Did you get a golden ticket in a bar of chocolate when Willy Wonka was shown? No. But, I'm sure someone did.
Do they host a "Road Show" at the location of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and serve BBQ? No. But Dahmer lived just across town from the Oriental.
Maybe they showed Deliverance at the end of a canoe trip, and had the guy there who says "Squeal Like a Pig" on sight for autographs and photos? Ok?
Goonies in a Cave? Again. Rocky Horror.
Nasfurato at the Cemetery? Why?
Close Encounters AT Devil's Tower? In Wyoming?

I didn't think so.

I'm glad you didn't think so.

Everyone does Rocky Horror. There's a theater in Akron Ohio that Does Rocky Horror.

And Yes to Wyoming. They also did Repo Man at a Repo Lot in Cali, and a host of other cool events on location.

Nasfurato: Because it's a creepy vampire classic.
At least your are glad.

Nobody has a stricter quiet policy than the Alamo. The Texter (new window)

Ahhh...the Alamo Draft House. They have one in Houston but it's way the hell on the other side of town from me so I don't get out there too often. It's the only place I've ever seen Holy Grail Ale on tap. And the cheesy 80's commercials and such before the film are awesome.

I really like the Tampa Theater. Cool architecture, an organ, full liquor bar, and I saw Burt Reynolds present a showing of Smokey and the Bandit to an enthusiastic full house. He even drove up in a Trans Am. Movie-going doesn't get any better than that.

And no one can ever accuse Tampa Theater of being subtle.

My favorite theater plays awesome indie and low-budget films, and has a full blown bar and an awesome restaurant connected. Yeah, the seats are beat up, and it only has one screen, but I'd watch all my movies there if I could.

2012-01-11 11:39:01 PM
I live in Tampa, and the Tampa Theater has NOTHING on the Alamo. I make the trek to Austin every year for Fantastic Fest, and it is a movie lovers paradise. The beer, the food, the fresh cookies, and all brought right to your seat while the movie is playing, and without being intrusive. I love that place!

I'm lucky to live in Florida which has the Muvico chain, probably the best of all the chains out there.

Big screens, stadium seating, digital 4k projectors, good stuff.

I miss the old Dobie Theater, back when it had character. The Alamo draft house is way better, but the old Dobie had real charm.

They did The Big Lebowski at a bowling alley. Gave everyone for White Russians. It was awesome. That is all.

OK, that prolly is the coolest movie theater in the world.

But I must give props to my beloved Chicago Music Box

Watching Jaws in an inner-tube on Lake Travis, watching the owner stomp a wanna-be pirate's video-camera to bits, guys in jet-packs for the Iron Man premier, Robosauras for the Transformers premier, Hobbits beating the crap out of each other...

Ah, the good old days.

Alamo Drafthouse is the only theatre I still go to.

Oh, and Moose's Tooth in Anchorage.

Muvicos are indeed very good. I live in St. Pete and we pretty much only have the Muvico and the Beach Theater, and both are pretty awesome. Can't imagine the Muvico can stay forever in that deserted BayWalk disaster though. Beach Theater is still better though for an overall experience, if not the most up-to-date technology.

it doesn't matter how cool the theater is. the patrons suck, no matter the location.
this is why i haven't been to a theater in a decade.

The funniest part is, I have you favorited in troll grey1 as "Hates everything" these days.

The ticket prices are the average amount for the market, but yeah, they're pizza prices are getting out of control.

And the Ritz is charging $6 for popcorn now. WTF? I'm getting old.

Some people can manage to watch a movie without eating a pizza.

Seriously. You can look it up.

San Francisco's Kabuki theater has little tables between pairs of seats. And yeah, that's where you put your pizza and beer.

They have similar theaters in Mexico City, but those tend to have table service and reclining seats. And they're much cheaper.

WTF is up with the NYC one being list-worthy? 12 foot screen and DVD? I have a 10 foot screen and Blu Ray. I have the popcorn maker too.

Alamo's not the only Brew & View out there, nor were they the first. But they definitely have a flair for presentation and a system that works well (most of the time).

2012-01-12 12:07:51 AM
P.S. Phoenix Farkers may agree with me on this -- Harkins Theatres isn't particularly noteworthy, except that unlike AMC, it's a family-owned chain that DOESN'T rip customers off. You can get the tickets for $7.50 at Costco. Buy a plastic cup and get $1 refills all year. Buy a t-shirt and get a free popcorn when you buy tickets.

It's not a public-access theater, but I used to work at Dolby in San Fran. Their screening room was the best. The foundation of the theater floats on rubber disks to eliminate vibrations from outside sources. Adjustable baffles in the walls allow the room's acoustics to be modified to match the presentation. The brushing on the light fixtures and finishes on the woodwork eliminate any distracting glare.

And the people there knew how to act in a theater.

God, I miss that place sometimes...especially when I find myself trapped in a Regal theater watching endless ads and hoping that the idiots behind me will finally stop yapping once the movie starts.

Alamo draft house. Yup balcony at the ritz is expensive but if you are doing one of the movie marathons its worth it.
The food is ok unless your going to a special event then they kick it up a noch. Prices aren't bad the pizzas are 10 inch but not pre made crap. You get a meal for what you would normaly pay for candy. Water is free. The events are what really set the draft house apart. If you ever get a chance to go to a draft house event go. It's worth it.

I can't figure out what the Alamo Guys were thinking when they decided to build one in Bum Fark, VA of all places, but as a former Austinite who still joneses for the Alamo, it is still totally worth the 80 mile drive each way from DC.

Love the Draft House. Suck it, Dallas.

Phoenix probably had the best movie theatre in the West. The Fox Theater. The city tore it down and built a bus station. I wish they would have shot everyone involved in that destruction.

The Winchester location was started as a separately owned franchise. Short version, some land-developers in VA. wanted a Drafthouse of their own and paid the owners of the Drafhouse the licensing and franchise fees.

Ah, thanks for that. I'm glad it's here, it beats the other theatre in town by a long shot any day.
