Welcome to Prohibition 2 : Electric Boogaloo, So old it's new.

I'd kinda welcome that, I know how to brew and distill and have a pretty flexible moral code.

Apparently grant funding for crap "research" is also addictive.

Next up: Earth, is it round?

Apparently not reading the whole article is addictive

In addition, the more endorphins released in the orbitofrontal cortex, the greater the feelings of intoxication in the heavy drinkers, but not in the control subjects.
"This indicates that the brains of heavy or problem drinkers are changed in a way that makes them more likely to find alcohol pleasant, and may be a clue to how problem drinking develops in the first place," said Mitchell.

How is that not crap research? Drinking is fun. This knowledge predates written history.

Knowing the why could lead to intoxicating substances that are fun that don't lead to liver failure and death. But we don't know until it's researched.

Sigh. This is why I still pay dues to research libraries and avoid getting anything serious off teh innerwebs.

This looks like old news to me. The amount of published neuroscience and related regarding addiction is huge. I'm pretty sure this turf has been chewed up.

The phrase you quoted was sort of the punchline of the joke for me. Anyone who has worked with addicts (or been to an Irish wake, football game in WI, etc) already knows this.

As to leading to a new substance that allows us to get our rocks off without side effects, I sure hope not. Read Brave New World, especially the parts about "soma." That book doesn't have a happy ending.
