thefts of entertainment products like CDs and DVDs have collapsed in England and Wales, to the point that they are now taken in just 7 percent of all burglaries in which something is stolen

7%?! That seems ridiculously high.

They've got some real criminal masterminds over in the UK.

Considering CDs and DVDs have a ridiculously low resale value compared to 10 years ago, this news is of little surprise.

I once had a burglar steal my Xbox 360, but left my copy of Grand Theft Auto 4. Irony.

Yep. DVDs are on their way out.

I bought a 360 slot case last week so that I could throw out all my DVD cases and save some space. Would have preferred to digitize them, but I don't know enough about ripping/decrypting/decoding/wtfever I have to do because of the farking mpaa.

In other news 8-track thefts are now completely non-existent.

I have a series of cases that hold all my music & computer cds and dvds. We move them rarely enough that we consider them a reasonable counterweight for the unstable half-desk the computer is sitting on.

I buy CDs for .50$ at the flea market, sometimes cheaper. Bought a full case for 5$ the other day. What seems to be the case, at least where I am and in my experience is, the bulk of CDs I'm seeing at the flea, or in pawn shops, trhift stores comes from the 90s. When CDs were really getting big and digital hadn't sunk it's teeth in. Some may say I got jobbed for buying a CD for .50$ but when I upload it onto my Ipod it's still 9.49$ cheaper than buying it. And I really don't know how to DL music on the sly without worry of screwing up my comp.

So I got Nothing Shocking, Ritual de lo Habitual, Possum Kingdom and a bunch of other odd stuff for about .10$ each in the full case. I was happy with that.

I guess what I'm saying is, keep stealing CDs because i like buying them cheap!

Could it possibly be that burglars don't have a big sack like this:

3.bp.blogspot.com

If you were a thief, would you rather grab an armload of DVDs that maybe value $30, or would you rather grab an iPod, iPad, camera, laptop, jewelery, and cash, all of which is also an armload?

Not every thief is the dumb kind who drop a deuce and take a nap during the break in.

My conceptual problem with buying used CDs and DVDs is that, aside from the rush of 'ohshoppingshoppingshoppingshopping' for buying shiat, when I sit down and think about it far too hard, I'm not doing anything other than spending money to justify my 'theft' of the product.

If the reason I shouldn't steal, is that the owners don't see a profit...isn't resale simply justified theft that I pay for?

I'm not really willing to shell out 10$ for a single and 9-12 songs I hate, especially when the single is going to be played as 'NEW NEW NEW OMG NEW DID WE SAY NEW!!!!' music for the next 6-12 months (DFW is now playing the Selena Gomez song 'Lovesong' as 'new' music, and it hasn't been played in the area till the break of this year, wtf slow DFW).

So...what's the compelling reason I shouldn't steal it? My answer is spotify, right now. I can sample a CD a few times to see if I really like it, and usually end up buying several CDs by the same artist if I do.

/Buys about 3-4 albums a year
//usually CDs off amazon when buying books
\\surprisingly doesn't download much, if at all, despite above logic

Um, CDs are digital. And it's means it is. I don't know which is more hopeless, teaching people what it's means, or telling them that CDs are digital...

Step 1: Get CDEX CDEX
Step 2: Play with the settings and at least set up the directories. I also like mine ripped to Artist/Date-Album/Song but it's not necessary
Step 3: Start CDEX
Step 4: Put in CD. It should recognize it and offer to rip it. Hit button.
Step 5: Profit

Are you kidding? What's digital, then, about an IC? Or a hard drive? Or a computer? Or a network cable? Then why refer to "downloads" as digital? The music is digital, the modem is not. You're making a specious distinction and you know it.

They haven't priced Mobile Fidelity CDs lately. Some of those are worth a pretty penny.

Ripped my DVD's to MKV, took about 15 minutes or so each on my dated laptop. They were all 1 to 1 copies, so no loss, and MKV keeps the chapters.
