No question. When you take into account the bugginess, and the sh*ttyness compared to the quality of games available at that time, it's the hands-down winner.

Fark Battletoads.

Not the worst, but I just feel like I should say that in every video game thread.

Superman for N64.

Takeshi's Challenge isn't all that bad, not only did it receive an unofficial English translation, it's actually a memorable Famicom game for all the weird tasks you had to do.

Games that are worse have poor programming. Case in point, the Superman 64 reference, and others here so far.

Charlie Freak: Wait, the NES/Famicom had a mic?

Famicom controllers had a built in mic, yes. That functionality was removed when they brought the system over the U.S., which created some complications in certain games.

For instance, in the original Legend of Zelda, there's a note in the manual that the enemy "Pol's Voice" is vulnerable to loud noises. This was a hint to players to yell into the mic on the controller to weaken the monster. Since the U.S. controller's had no mic, this hint was rendered essentially meaningless.

Wow. I never played with an N64 but I know the graphics weren't even remotely close to looking that crappy, even on debut. Mescaline + programming = a hell of a drugged game.

/also hates consoles
//controllers are stupid
///console-tweaked games suck

I wonder how many US children screamed at the TV anyway...

I'm not sure if this directly tied to the topic but just about any korean MMO is terrible. One particular Espanada Grenada Sword of the New World is so grindy it make it an art form. Since it is so heavily focused on grinding with huge numbers of trash mobs a persons avatars(you get 3) basically don't require the play to guide them. Leave them in a room, go to work, come back they will likely still be grinding away at trash mobs.

No hate for Daikatana? I played that crappy game and, no, John Romero did not make me his biatch. That was blatant false advertising.

Takeshi's Challenge, it seems, is an elaborate practical joke on Kitano's part - a way of thumbing his nose at people who waste their time trying to accomplish futile tasks

So no. Not even close

The US version compensated for the "no-microphone" aspect by making them extremely vulnerable to arrows. Did you ever try that? Like, you can multi-kill them with a single arrow.

Isn't there some website or youtube channel some guy reviews video games while narrating a walkthrough? He reviews horrible games, and ends up swearing at TV the whole time.... if I recall some of them were pretty funny.

I do want to lob some hate at Crash Bandicoot's abusive load times on the PS2... like a 10 second cut scene took 50 seconds to load, then another 50 seconds to get to the next cut scene.

I have played ET and it sucked. I played JAWS for the NES and that sucked. We Had War Gods (borrowed from somebody) but all we ever played on the N64 was GoldenEye, Wave Race and Madden (and sometimes MarioKart). I've never seen Superman 64 and BOY does that look like crap!

Takeshi's Challenge looks to be too zen for its own good.

2012-01-11 12:40:54 PM
Takeshi no Chousenjou was unpleasant to play ON PURPOSE.

Not only is it not in the same league as E.T., Superman 64, Big Rigs, or the myriad Action 54 titles that made Cheetahmen seem polished and bugfree... it's not even in the same competition.

There are a lot of crappy video games (many of the more notable ones came from the last decade and had "Tycoon" in their title). It's not hard to make a video game suck; just make it completely unresponsive, devoid of any sort of fun, and throw in some compelling feature (a popular license or an iconic character) that makes people want to keep playing even though they should know better.

What we really lack is a "best worst game," something akin to Troll 2, where it's so awful that it's good. A game that would be otherwise competent if it weren't so amazingly misguided. I'd say "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" would be one of my nominations for this category.

Gergesa: Oh you know what? I have never played a terminator or robocop game that was any good. Anyone know if any of those were any good?

I remember Robocop 3 for the SNES had play control so bad that making it past the first level was an incredible accomplishment. Even if you managed to get through the much faster and capable enemies, the moving platforms over pits were incredibly hard to successfully jump on with your crappy jumping ability, so about 5 minutes into the game when you first encounter a pit, you usually die.

FTFA: For most, the Nintendo Famicom's Takeshi no Chousenjou (or Takeshi's Challenge) is a game so terrible, so utterly lacking in merit, that it's passed into videogaming folklore.

Ahhh, yes, Takeshi's Challenge. A game so terrible and so infamous that I, a child of the eighties, have just now heard of it. Yep, a very memorable bad game, right up there with ....uhhh ... that one .... you know .... where there were these guys .... and things happened ... things!

Seriously? Superman 64, Total Recall, Back to the Future, the recent Jurassic Park, ET - none of these beat this game? Bull.

2012-01-11 12:47:25 PM
Zoo games, in general. Redneck Jamboree, Chicken Blaster, M&M Beach Party. Play those and you will know video game pain.

You're looking for the AVGN videos over at Cinemassacre. He's actually working on a feature-length AVGN film, which will be... interesting. I'm not sure that it's a good idea, but he really wants to do it.

I actually didn't mind E.T., there were certainly worse or more frustrating games on the Atari. Considering it was developed by one guy in about 4 weeks when a typical game development cycle then would take 6-7 months, its actually pretty good.

This:

Is probably the worst video game I ever played. It had it all.

- completely nonsensical and incoherent storyline
- utterly horrid voiceovers
- abysmal controls
- can be beaten in 20 minutes on your first try (this might be a good thing)

What a POS.
