There is no reason EVER why the bolded portion has to figure in to the decision process, hence my USA USA post earlier. That is at least as nasty as the behavior you site, which is valid.

But cost NEVER applies with children. Medicaid will always cover minors. You may not get all the bells and whistles or the latest asthma inhaler, but we do cover kids at least in this country. There is NO EXCUSE for what these parents did and that article was pathetic.

You can be pretty damn poor and still make to much to qualify for Medicade or even CHIP.

It's state by state, and Texas has a terrible enrollment record, but Medicaid will cover any child with medical needs that their parents cannot pay for. The barriers in Texas are not about eligibility, but access. They have the same problems with SNAP and TANF.

These children weren't even attending school. There is no excuse. Period.

Choosing to live is an elective procedure.

They looked at my documents and told me that to qualify for Medicaid (just for the kids) we would have to sell our only car. And, of course, to continue getting unemployment I'd have to apply for jobs daily. Without a car.

"Attempted involuntary manslaughter"? That sounds like something the DA made up just so they had something to charge these people with besides "being really crappy parents".

Also, it's a sad state of affairs when "couldn't afford to see the doctor" is a plausible excuse in this sort of situation.

For children, most eligibility is declaratory and very generous. Some states are putting up intimidating application processes, but that doesn't change eligibility.

In the 90s, cars were assessed at Blue Book value and could be counted against a claim. That's not the case in the states that I am familiar with today.

That is likely true. The amount of hoop-jumping involved with getting enrolled in the program is stupifying. I should know, I tried to get into it when my daughter was born. I ended up walking out. It's very daunting.

True, but there are plenty of agencies that offer free/low cost care to ill children. These assholes didn't even try contacting any of them. According to the article, they didn't even take the child to an ER.

Mostly, it is because the programs are understaffed. What should take 20 min. takes 4 hours because there aren't enough people to deal with all the people/paperwork.

They may have failed their child. I am not disputing that, especially as long as this must have went on, but I personally have had to decide on if nmy child really needed to go to the doctor or not. It's not a good place to be, and I can easilly see them saying "It doesnt hurt, and went away last time" when making the decision. Ginandbacon's other discoveries on the matter excluded from my reasoning.

Sadly, in many states it's deliberate. They want to limit enrollment to be able to say that they cut the number of people on assistance by x amount. Even though these are federally funded programs that don't impact their budgets. They are playing politics with the most at risk persons (children) with no regard to the real-life costs. It's shameful.

That said, the parents in this story refused to provide any education or medical care for any of their kids. That's just inexcusable.

Having had lymphoma myself, I can attest to the painlessness. Even when you push on it, it just feels like a big lump. Still, the parents should have gotten that sh*t checked out.

I hope you don't take anything a prosecutor says as truthful. They lie as much as your average politician (which most of them are)
