Nothing says 'stable government' like the military threatening the prime minister with a coup.

And it's not even that they have them, but individual commanders supposedly have control of them, not the central government.

Pakistan: Where the most heinous terrist of modern times can camp out behind razorwire less than 1 mile from the national military academy in a neighborhood filled with ex-military generals and their family.

Now....THAT's and ally!

Dear Pakistan:

Now that you're about to become a failed state, you will deliver all your nuclear weapons and all enriched material (weaponized or not) to the UN.

You have 24 hours to comply.

Sincerely,
USA

IIRC Pakistan has something like 6 nuclear weapons. Because I cling to an irrational belief in my own government's competence, I firmly believe that the site of each and every one is known to us, and pre-targeted with A Tomahawk or a B-2 loaded with bunker-busters, or a Predator drone, or several pounds of C-4 already concealed in the silo, or a SEAL team whose job it is to pacify the site and retrive the package, or all of the above in reverse order.

It sort of works for Turkey. The ever present background threat of military coups worked pretty well in keeping Turkey a secular, democratic first world country. If Pakistan had a role model like Ataturk it might work for them. Since all they seem to have is a bad case of religion the outlook is not as good.

I'd sure as hell sleep better if there were a coup.

Though in reality, hopefully, the military already has 100% control of the nukes.

What you again?

No Pakistan has /ZERO/ sites, they drive them around in unmarked vans exactly to prevent what you describe.

You sure made an awful long post without bothering to look facts up.

I'm not sure anyone is really grasping the danger of Pakistan's nucular capability. All they would have to do is load it up into their delivery system, and in several months and several ferries later, they might seriously do some wicked shiat.

Not accidentally. Quite intentionally.

Pakistan is Sunni Muslim. They were protecting Bin Laden. They use terror groups as tactical and strategic assets. And they have nuclear weapons. If a nuke got into the hands of nihilistic Sunni jihadists like Al Qaeda, Pakistan would be an exceptionally prime source.

Iran is Shia. The Sunni extremists hate them like they hate regular non-Muslims. They have a stable state and at least pay lip service to elections. I'm not saying their getting a nuke is not a problem, but the far more paranoid, unstable and extremist country already has nukes.

Came in to say that. Iran's nuke desire is less about the Great Satan and more the 100+ million mortal enemies right next door. China has the bomb so India decides the finally need it. India has it so Pakistan builds it too. Iran decides they need it... MAD works, or at least it does with rational actors. The next decade, S. Asian is going to dominate world focus.

And India will clap their hands and praise Vishnu that their Paki aggressors have been delivered into their hands. Yeah, that'll go down well. (Still better than warheads being delivered anywhere else in the region, though.)

The only real upswing of this is that they all (but China) concentrate entirely on short- and medium-range launchers. Unfortunately, they all either have or are desperately developing at least a few ICBMs, and there's always the danger that a few little nukes going off between neighbors triggers WW3.

At least my kids are still more likely to see the future than I was when I was born. Be sane, crazy Asia.

I am not quite clear what you are trying to say. Are you making fun of the Pakistanis lack of a conventional transcontinental delivery system or are making fun of people who underestimate the difficulty of defending against someone who uses nontraditional delivery systems?

There does not seem to be any defence that would work against a nuke that gets shipped to its destination in a container.
