I can only imagine what the woman would have done if it had been a Maury episode and the guy wasn't the Father.

At first, I thought the headline meant the woman hit Judge Judy's domestic partner. Then I was perplexed because I didn't think Judge Judy was gay. I actually had to read the article for once.

The first 10 minutes of the "Whitney" pilot were pretty grueling, but I never felt the need to grab a hammer.

Seriously, how does this judge get away with the crap she pulls. I understand TV ratings and all, but her legal fees must be high.

Nope, they sign papers stating that Judy's "verdict" is seen as a mediation and both parties will abide by it.

And if they watch the show, and are still stupid enough to go on it, they deserve what they get.

With a picture like that, it's hard NOT to diagnose her with Crazy Eyes at least. I know, not exactly a clinical diagnosis there...

If I remember right, not only are there papers for mediation, but she's also a recognized judge in the state - she's qualified and reduces their course load.

Also, any lawyers are unlikely to be interested:
1. Signed binding arbitration papers makes any case difficult
2. It's a TV Show, they can't really argue they didn't know what they were getting into - worse happens on plenty of other shows.
3. Her decisions, fully recorded, are normally reasonably explained.
4. It's a 'small claims court' - unless they think they can get Judy on some sort of abuse(see #1 and 2), the money involved in even a bad decision is negligible.
5. People are PAID to go on the show, with any decisions coming out of the pay - IE they pay both parties $1k, and Judy finds A owes B $500, A leaves with $500, B with $1500, and ultimately BOTH are typically happy because at least the issue is resolved. A no longer has B's suit hanging over their head, B got their money.

Pretty much. The TV show pays both parties, they agree to drop their actual real cases against each other, and they go in front of some actor who was formerly a judge. Everyone hams it up and the real winner is the production company.

Doesn't make her not a contemptible twat and those who think she's entertaining or smart also contemptible, but that's how it works.

Yes. People get paid to go on TV. Shock. She was a court judge for over 20 years hearing over 20,000 cases.

If you don't understand the show it means that you are too stupid to get it. Judge Judy boils the cases down to the essential facts and grills the parties about the pertinent facts. Her demeanor comes from dealing with farking retards on a daily basis. If you go into that show and you present your facts in a concise and clear way she is very pleasant.

You know what type of people are contemptible? People who make snap judgments about things they don't know anything about.

I have a hard-on for calling out idiots who talk about things in sweeping generalizations. Judge Judy created the show, the show did not create Judge Judy. Do a little research on her and you will know that she has always been this way. She is not an actor and wouldn't even know how to act if she tried. Does she lay it on thicker on the show than she would if she was in a real court? Of course. It is her house, she can do what she wants. But make no mistake, that it is the house that Judge Judy built, and not the other way around.

Just because someone is on TV doesn't mean that they are fake. She is a very intelligent experienced judge who happens to do a show. The farking abominations are the Divorce Court or to some extent the People's Court. Those shows are more daytime dramas than court show. Judge Judy doesn't let these idiots tell their stories. She doesn't entertain the silliness that many of these shows display.

If you honestly can't tell the difference then it means you just haven't watched the show, which means you shouldn't be in here talking shiat about things you know not of.

It is a farce to call Judy a judge. I don't ever want to meet her. You can tell she has already decided the case before hand (99% of the time young person loses to old dude). Only once did I see her realize that she was snapping at the wrong person and changed her tune before verdict. She does force basic court room manners, however they don't apply to her. Judge or not rude is rude, and dealing with general people that bug you is no excuse to be rude.

The show is not about the law. It is about entertainment, and for some reason people like to see a judge yelling at stupid people. A friend of an ex-girlfriend of mine was approached by reps from the People's Court to appear on the show and they told her that the show would cover all expenses, flight, hotel, meals, and any verdict. She declined because she did not want her private case with someone else to be aired on TV.

Knara: Pretty much. The TV show pays both parties, they agree to drop their actual real cases against each other, and they go in front of some actor who was formerly a judge. Everyone hams it up and the real winner is the production company.

I'd say the plaintiffs are typically winners as well. In exchange for appearing on TV and potentially showing themselves as an ass, they get paid.

On the best end, you get infinite more money from some deadbeat who wouldn't have paid even a court order. More realistically, you get 2X the reward(your pay for appearing plus the other dude's pay because you won 'big').

Worst end, you lost your case big time - but now you're not being called into a government court and having to pay out of pocket, as opposed to appearing on TV for a bit and simply having a day's pay garnished.

Doesn't make her not a contemptible twat and those who think she's entertaining or smart also contemptible, but that's how it works.

Thinks she's entertaining? She obviously IS entertaining to some segment of the population, as Mock26 mentions, otherwise she wouldn't have a viewership sufficient to keep her on the air for years.

Ever consider that this tendency might be because old dudes understand liability laws better than young folk? Might be less likely to cause stupid damage and refuse to pay, resulting in a court case?
