Not so much old news, Hankie Fest, more like a Follow-Up.

/The asshat should have spent time in jail with Bubbas.

Did the kid deserve it? Come on people... Who here has NOT thrown their kid overboard once or twice? I'm sure the little guy learned his lesson and won't ever let what happened, happen again. Right?

Your dad had an argument with his GF, then threw you off a boat into a harbor full of boats?
What a coincidence, then.

2012-01-11 09:39:45 AM
Please, please, please tell me he doesn't have any custody or visitation rights with those kids.

Also, I agree with the prosecutors that he should have done time. As much time as possible. He sounds like a complete douche. I like how he went limp when the cops tried to get him off the boat. They should have just left dad in the harbor. He's very lucky the 7-year-old knew how to swim and could tread water until someone saved him.

What a complete piece of sh_t.

What would happen if this guy did that in international waters and then the passengers of the boat beat the father to death? Who charges them and with what?

The deputies are all siblings. They brought the boys to the harbour station, where the deputies' mother set out milk and cookies for them.

Asshole should have done jail time. And shouldn't be allowed to see his kids closer than through a glass wall. Doesn't say what happened to the divorce decree with the mother of the two, but I'm guessing (hoping?) it was amended to say something along those lines.

"A court sentenced Sloan Briles to three years of formal probation, one year in a child abusers treatment program, and 180 days in a Veterans Administration residential treatment program,........."

Granted the punishment was excessive, but does the dad really require "treatment"? So smacking the crap out of your bratty kids is an illness?

Headso: What would happen if this guy did that in international waters and then the passengers of the boat beat the father to death? Who charges them and with what?

Their nation of origin, the man's nation of origin, and/or the nation where the vessel is flagged and registered. Presumably they'd be charged with murder or manslaughter or something like that.

If Alcoholism and/or Bipolar Disorder was a factor, then yes.

WTF! I raise my voice at my kid for throwing a fit in the isles of a store and I'm threatened with arrest, social services, and jail time. This douche throws his kid, who can barely swim, into a busy harbor, and he gets a slap on the wrist?! Sounds to me like he's on the higher end of the tax bracket, he paid off the right people, or his daddy's a Senator or something.

I like how he had to jump off the boat to avoid having the rest of the passengers kick the shiat out of him.

2012-01-11 10:16:52 AM
FTA: He told CNN affiliate KTLA in August that "we were having fun, it was a harbor cruise!" He said he did not hit his son and he "did nothing except jump in the water with my kid."

...Briles jumped into the water subsequently "to avoid the angry passengers on the Queen," the district attorney's office said. There were 85 people on the tour boat.

Brilliant

The only thing he did wrong was that he perpetrated this crap in public. Wanna beat your kids? Do it at home, okay?

Pansy kid. Nice safe harbor.
Dad's argument was w/ his wife. And, I submit, those tend to become a tad more rageilicious than GFs.
And about how it was time I quit holding on to stuff and swim.
It was a "lake", wide spot in the river at Peoria. Good swift current there when the dam is open.
Would have been nice to see a little more traffic.
Good times.

"The father took the boy to the bow of the boat and told him, 'If you don't stop crying, I'm going to throw you overboard,' "

To be fair, the father did warn the kid.
You think that kid is going to believe his dad the next time he acts up? Hell yes.

Throwing someone off the bows of a moving vessel is a hellishly dangerous thing to do. I'd classify it as attempted murder.

The sentence was too light. Keelhauling might have been more appropriate.

Luckily the crew was paying close enough attention and had enough spare time in their schedule that they could swing around and protect the kid. The dad and his girlfriend must have been throwing one hell of a hissy fit for the crew to be that involved in their shenanigans.

2012-01-11 11:52:27 AM
