I don't think anyone is upset about Harrison's tackle. It's about as close to a clean tackle the guy will be able to make.

What I don't get is I see low tackles all the time. It's pretty common for a cornerback to go low on a running back and knock his legs out from under him. There's never any outcry.

Indisputable fact: Most NFL cornerbacks haven't been accused of and suspended for multiple rapes illegal tackling.

Besides, Decker's a pretty big guy. Let's see what Ike Taylor thinks about going high on a big receiver.

But that's about their 4th receiver lost in the past 12 months. Thomas can only do so much, and Royal has disappeared. What'd he have, 20 catches this season?

There is nothing wrong with tackling the legs. That is in fact how you are supposed to tackle. What Harrison doesn't seem to understand is that tackling is wrapping your arms around the opposing player and dragging him down. Not launching yourself at him at a high rate of speed in order to knock him down. That's called checking, and it's done in hockey, and even they have rules about how you can check someone one.

Nice! Welcome to the big time!

I heard some football player say (don't remember who) that he'd rather get hit in the head than the knees. A head injury puts you out for a game or a season, a knee injury ends your career.

But yeah, even when Harrison tries to play nice people get hurt. He's just a tank.

I agree, nobody should try to hit someone as hard as they can. It might make a professional athlete sad.

2012-01-11 12:04:22 PM
So Harrison can't hit guys high or can't hit guys low. If he doesn't hit a guy in a specific square inch in the center of the chest he will get fined.

2012-01-11 12:05:13 PM
They complain when he goes high, so he goes low. They complain when he goes low, so now what? He has to force punch you in your belly button to tackle?

WRs have been saying for a long time they'd rather get tackled high than have someone take out their legs, but you fine a guy repeatedly for it and he ends up doing exactly what you asked.

2012-01-11 12:07:18 PM
Seemed like a cheap shot to me. Legal, but dangerous. He could have hit him in the chest, waist, or thighs and wrap up like we were all taught. He chose to plow into the guys knee.

Is this the thread where the Steeler Homers keep acting like (again) the only way to tackle someone is by their head or knees?

There is a reason why these things keep happening to James Harrison and the common denominator is James Harrison.

And please John Elway or any NFL QB for that matter, knows as much about tackling as I know about "childbirth".

As a Raven's fan I try and support the theory that not all Steelers fans are dbags, but I've come across a number of people on here that make it difficult to support. Of course I don't believe in trash talk, so that will always be an issue for me.

I for one hate the Steelers but that was a good hit by Harrison. The roughing the passer call was 100% from reputation. It was a little late...but I've seen worse. I'd say Hines Ward is a dirtier player. Harrison plays old school football. IMHO

2012-01-11 12:20:40 PM
Very legal hit and I actually am happy to see Harrison make that kind of play. I thought he was incapable of going low, by his own admission, but I'm glad to see that's not the case.

Face it, a blown out knee is terrible but a headshot resulting in a concussion, or worse, is much more devastating on one's life as a whole. Just ask Sidney Crosby if he'd rather be hit in the knee or the head.

merkey88: and Royal has disappeared. What'd he have, 20 catches this season?

Isn't Royal more of a speedy slot WR-type? In a run first, second, and play-action third offense, a receiver of his ilk probably won't put up much numbers. Put him on the Pats, and he probably accumulates 20 catches in 4 weeks.

Sorry...but I'm gonna side with Harrison. All year long it's been "hit 'em lower, hit 'em lower" followed by tens of thousands of dollars in fine. He finally hits someone low and the guy blows and ACL.

Ask Decker if he would prefer a concussion or a blown ACL.

Bring back leather (or similar soft composite) helmets and watch injuries drop by half.

2012-01-11 12:33:49 PM
At the risk of feeding the trolls...

The issue isn't where he tackles people, it's how he does it. The very first day of everybody's football practice you are told not to lead with your head down. Not because you'll hurt someone, but because once you drop your head you have no idea where the fark you're aiming. Keep your facemask up, lead with your shoulder and wrap up, and magically you stop making illegal hits that have a high probability to hurt somebody. You'll also knock the fark out of them and have a higher chance of causing a fumble. Tackle em as hard as you can, but do it like a grownup and no one will hate you, and you'll miss WAY less tackles. Don't get why some of these guys can't seem to do that.

I've had neither for the record. But playing the odds, a single concussion is highly unlikely to end your career or affect you long term. A blown ACL could do both.

Now, obviously, if he gets concussed repeatedly we have an issue. But the ACL...phew...for a guy making his living running, that's a tough one.

2012-01-11 12:47:00 PM

TheSup3rN0va: Don't get why some of these guys can't seem to do that.

Keep in mind Eric Decker is 6'3 and about 220lbs. A "form tackle" on someone that big who is catching the ball on the run and has some momentum going is not easy for anyone, especially considering Harrison was coming from behind the play, and wasn't in a position to hit him head-on, but from the side.

We can debate Harrison's "form" 'till the cows come home, but in that situation he decided to take out his legs, which you see several times a game and usually a knee ligament isn't injured in the process. I highly doubt even a complete asshole like Harrison was intending to do anything other than bring him down on that particular play.

Except the part where it was awful form. Harrison has to tackle like a fool because he has no idea what a form tackle is. I forgot who it was, but one of the games this weekend there was a play where a DB made a great openfield tackle on a RB and it was pure form(head to the side pointing up, shoulderpads to the midsection, hands behind the back of the legs) and I noted to myself that is was the best tackle I've seen all year and that I rarely see DBs make actual tackles rather than just throwing their bodies at the opponents legs(which is what Harrison did).

It took me about three years to get back fine motor control skills to where I was previously after a concussion in a car accident. You don't just "get over" a concussion...the effects linger and are generally not obvious to the casual observer.

Depends on how bad the concussion is. I've had multiple concussions, including one where the symptoms lingered for months. I would still rather have a concussion than blow my ACL.

Its true. Had harrison done what he always does, there would have been a fine, a penalty, and even a possible ejection. And you know, Harrison wanted to go high. Its looks like the league is getting to him. Making him change his style, and what happens? He injures someone. This is a rough sport. People are going to get hurt no matter what. So stop making them overthink how they tackle, cuz its probably just going to lead to more injuries.

2012-01-11 01:14:47 PM

It wasn't the best tackle, but it was legal, a big change for Harrison, who has been out to remove people's heads from their bodies. His tackle is not too terribly different from what Polamalu does on a regular basis. He just threw himself at the guy's legs. Will it make the highlight reel? No. But is also won't draw a penalty and a fine. If we took the tackle of style points, it would be awful, but it was a functional tackle that did not result in Harrison being removed from the game. Harrison seemed to actually think (!) and realized that Decker could qualify as a defenseless receiver.

And, I try hard not to think of Harrison as someone who combines the unfortunate qualities of a lunatic and someone with mental retardation, so does anyone know anything about the guy when he's trying NOT to injure someone? Charity work? Good deeds? Donations?
