Did the waiter deserve the tip?

You don't just hand someone money for taking your order and throwing your food in front of you.

I can understand the emotions involved, but this sort of thing can never be beneficial to your business, and I think that in this case, discretion would have been the better choice.

He must have, considering the article says she actually did leave a $10 tip and the restaurant apologized. Yes, despite the headline that says she didn't tip.

The only way this woman and "Boners" could possibly exist in same story.

2012-01-11 09:01:04 AM
Looking at their facebook, there's some morons standing up for the restaurant.

"She *thinks* she left a tip but she did NOT. You ALWAYS tip the server on the amount BEFORE a discount! The service is the same whether you have a coupon or not. I am surprised more people don't know this."

Same person:

"She did not leave a tip...she should've tipped on the original amount, the $40. So she actually left NOTHING. And also, the food is not the server's fault...you never stiff someone for what is the kitchen's fault."

Sorry, but if it's discounted, that's what the tip's gonna be based on, if the service and food deserve the percentage. Wrong time to start picking fights over tips when people are cutting back and going out is starting to become a special thing again.

waitstaff are paid 2.50/hr. on average in the u.s. I've worked places where they were paid nothing at all. You might scream about how illegal this is but is not atypical. I tend to work BOH and I cannot recall the last job at which I was paid time and 1/2 for my overtime, it's simply not done in that industry, legality be damned. So, unless you're a huge jerk, tip your waitress. I smell shenanigans on the part of the restaurant though. Suspect they saw the bad review and reacted poorly.

$10 is a good tip, coupon or not. Boners BBQ can go fark themselves with a corn dog.

Every single restaurant I've eaten at, which featured the slogan "Put a little South in your mouth," has featured shiat food. They are invariably run by people who think "Southern cooking" means overcooked vegetables and meat with enough salt to melt all the snow and ice in Alaska.

As for tipping: only if the service is good. I waited tables all through college and occasionally I'd "sacrifice" a table (give them crap service) in order to catch up with all the other seats in my section. That happens, life is tough, and if they stiffed me - well, no skin off my ass. On the other hand, I left $4 for a $12 lunch tab the other day because the woman was really nice and even fixed a to-go tea when I mentioned I had enjoyed the tea.

So, for the unlearned in life's lessons, here's how it works: give crap service, get crap tips. Give good service, get good tips. That's not 100% true, but tips paid most of my college tuition so it's right often enough.

People who think that tipping is mandatory need to go back to watching TV and eating their government cheese. Fark 'em.

I would normally have patronized such a refined and upscale establishment, but due to the completely out-of-character behavior of the owner, I shall no longer consider it.

/ No, but really, that was out of line of the owner and, even though I'm local, I will now never eat there.

If you don't want to tip, then stay the fark home or eat at McDonalds

Hey Farkers, come one come all - it's the monthly Fark TIPPING THREAD!

Question:

Let's say you go to a restaurant and order a meal for $50. In addition, you select a $100 bottle of wine, bringing the total to $150. If you tip 20%, then that's $30.

Let's say you go to a restaurant and order a meal for $50. In addition, you select a $10 bottle of wine, bringing the total to $60. If you tip 20%, then that's $12.

It's the same amount of work for the server to open the $100 bottle as it is the $10 bottle. So why more than double the tip?

i don't tip. i worked as a waiter for a little while. i did a half hearted job but i didn't care if i got less money because i didn't need all that much. it worked out great for me because i was making money kinda like just because of the reputation of the place. it seems some people think employees will always work as hard as they can to get as much money as they can and it just isn't true. the same thing happened when i was a salesman. i cut my commissions at a crappy audio/video store and started to outsell the other salesmen. i told the owner i was single and lived in a crappy apt and didn't care for many material things. i didn't give a fark the other salesmen had families, kids, 2 cars, and a mortgage. if a restaurant pays the entire wage for the waiter and doesn't allow tipping they will notice the ones that suck damn quickly.

A humble call to the woman from the owner asking how the service and food was and how they could improve would have been the most beneficial thing they could have done for both parties.

As a former fine dining waiter and manager...here is the trend/general etiquette that I have seen that I find to be acceptable...tip 20% up to $100 bottles...after that, keep it at $20-$25 per bottle...especially if the waiter is attentive with making sure everyone's glass is full. Yes, it is absurd on the waiters part to expect a 20% tip on a $500+ bottle of wine. Then again, if you have a customer dropping $500+ per bottle, whats an extra 20% to them anyway? 20%-25% tips on expensive bottles was not uncommon.

I also used to have a few customers request that their bottles be split off on a separate check so they could tip on the food and drinks separately and accordingly.

BalugaJoe: They should get Dick Cheney to great customers.

That's a hell of a spectrum you're defining there.

2012-01-11 09:31:11 AM
All restaurants should be required to pay at least minimum wage, and a livable wage if they value their servers. I am fine with this cost being passed to the customer, it will eliminate the need to for customers to guess and gauge and stiff. The practice of tipping is super dumb, and now overly abused in all kinds of industries, fark tipping.

That said, I do tip 20% unless something the server does pisses me off to the point where the bill is rounded to the dollar, almost never happens. People should tip because that is what is expected, unless you want to look like a prick you should tip too. Servers didn't design the system and are as stuck in it as we customers, so be a decent human being and do what is required even if it is something you despise.

2012-01-11 09:32:05 AM
Dear Restaurant,

Tipping is not required. Tipping is a sign of good service, and if the service is really, really bad then leaving no tip is appropriate.

Sincerely,
Customers.

======================

Dear Waitpeople,

See above letter. Also, 15% is NOT a big tip. In fact, 10% is NOT a bit tip. The percentage tipped does NOT increase along with inflation. The fact that it is a percentage of a total means that the tip will increase along with inflation. For example, 10% of $1 is 10 cents. If inflation goes up 100% that $1 bill is now $2. And do you know what the new tip is? Yes! 20 cents! See the wonders of math! The tip increase proportionately with inflation without having to increase the actual tip percentage! Stop screaming that it is now 20%, because it is not.

Sincerely,
Customers.

I was going to make some comment about how ridiculous it is when business owners make lame "apologies" when they get caught in the media doing something boneheaded, but since this has degenerated into yet another tipping argument, I won't bother.

2012-01-11 09:34:11 AM
As a business owner who deals with the public all day, I sympathize. I even have a hard time keeping a civil tongue in my head, and I completely understand how suicidal it is for a business to let people know what you really think of them. It's explains the appeal of gigantic Ameri-Marts. If you are a self-absorbed a**hole, you're MUCH safer dealing with a polyesther-clad teenage clerk than the owner of a small business. You're not qualified to engage in any human contact anyway, you just want your arse kissed by someone. It's best if they are anonymous and totally divested of any interest in the stock.

But that barrier of anonimity disappears when you have to sit in one spot for 30 minutes, talk to the same person 3-4 times, and eat a meal. Gigantic douchebags prefer fast food for a reason.

Should have RTFA.

Initial bill was $40, they had a 10$ discount coupon. They left $40, so 10$ tip. By my reckoning that's either a 25% tip (based on pre-discount total) or a 33% tip (based on post-discount total).

If she does a good job she will get a good tip. If she does not do a good job then she will not get a good tip. It is really that simple. If waitstaff want to be tipped every single time, regardless of quality of service, then the restaurant industry needs to do away with tipping and pay a living wage.

So I'm bad at math, but since you tip based on the original price ($40), and she left the discounted price ($30) plus ten dollars, did she not actually tip 25%?

Stupid thing is that either way, it's a good tip. 10 on 30 is 33%, 10 on 40 is 25%. So if she was a 'total biatch' and tipped on the reduced amount instead of the full amount, it's still an awesome tip.

Isn't that more like a third of the bill? So approx. 33% isn't too mean. Either way, if someone hasn't left a tip the waiting staff might want to work out if the service and/or food was too crappy to be rewarded rather than e-stalking the customer.
