OK, I'm just too old and white to get any of this.

Aulus: OK, I'm just too old and white to get any of this.

But is the soul of the music on the 1 and the 3? Or on the 2 and the 4?

Prezi fail.

2012-01-11 09:18:11 AM
They sure use a lot of words.

That... was actually really interesting and informative.

The thing is that people actually like Breakbeat, whereas people only pretend to like dubstep so they can seem "with it."

Where does Electric Boogaloo fit in any of this?

it's almost at breakbeat speed, but at half breakbeat speed?

2 and 1 are half but close. 140 and 70 are not

The more you know.

And of course they have to put in the obligatory old movie quote from some sci-fi movie. It's like...

The System is down!

That is a GREAT explanation. The video text was god-awful though and added nothing to the summary.

Dubstep is what happens when one Transformer loves another dearly, but the second doesn't love the first one back very much. And wears a short skirt.

he does a good job but it still sucks. i'd rather listen to early 2000's Icey than any Dubstep tripe from the last 5 years.

There was no dubstep 5 years ago, Skrillex started in 2010

Dead for Tax Reasons: it's almost at breakbeat speed, but at half breakbeat speed?

that's not what he is saying - the tempo doesn't change, the placement of the sounds on the beat does. the tempo doesn't change, just the placement of the percussive elements within the bar.

It's like taxonomy, for music. I kind of hate it.

The label may be new, but the music itself is nothing ground breaking or unique. All that bass stuff was done thoroughly by experimental and industrial bands starting as far back as 1989.

But since so many were ignoring electronic music during the 90's it's easy to convince them old stuff is new.

J. Frank Parnell: But since so many were ignoring electronic music during the 90's it's easy to convince them old stuff is new.

Bears repeating. The same people that are so into it now, like it's some new fad that just cropped up, were too busy listening to crap like N'SYNC and The Offspring on their new portable cd players with anti-skip feature.

Note that when he says 'shuffle', the more technical musical term is 'swung'. That's why he references jazz, which of course includes the era of swing music (please do not remind me of the more recent neo-swing fad of the 90s, shudder.) By and large, jazz is almost always swung (save for lots of fusion or comtemporary,) where the off beat is delayed to varying degrees to be closer (or even past) where the 3rd triplet might be.

By and large, tho some of his descriptions might be over simplifications, I'd say that he does a pretty good job of breaking down the various styles of electronic music by characteristics of their beats and tempos. (Although I'm not exactly sure I'd put hiphop under the label of electronic music per se, it's definately useful to include in the discussion of rhythmic styles as a reference.)

Oh fark, someone discovered Prezi. Prezi makes me nauseous, it's like being forced to watch someone else's game footage while they twitch thru Battlefield or COD.

That's a good track for action movies. that was dubstep?

So now you can create an entire new "genre" of music by speeding up or slowing down a record? Wow, so creative.

2012-01-11 04:36:13 PM
That was really interesting.. I had no idea how genres were classified exactly.

/For the record, I was listening to dubstep before anyone knew what it was.. though I don't really listen to it anymore..

I HATE Dubstep, but at least I now know where it came from and why it's called what it is.

/Breaks/Trance FTW.

Yeah, he's dead on. The only thing he's missing is that dubstep usually has an upper synth line going at twice the speed of the bass, so while the bass may be "ultra slow" as he says, the overall pace tends to be much faster.

2012-01-11 05:23:58 PM
It's not a bad explanation.

Altho, his idea of splitting it into straight beats and broken beats fails somewhat if you try to classify oldschool hardcore or the newer breakbeat hardcore that sounds similar. Even tho it's all in the same genre, some of it will have a beat every quarter note and some of it won't.

Here's a slightly dated (early 2000s, so no dub) but very comprehensive guide to different electronic genres from the 50s onwards.Ishkur's guide to electronic music.

It's an autoplaying flash file with sound, so you have been warned. Just click on the main genre families on the left hand side. It's also farking funny in parts (check out the awfulness that is euro house).

Dammit, man! I was just about to post this. Anyway, I've loved this site since techno took over alternative briefly in the late 90's and I got all obsessed with DDR.

Your favorite band does not define a new musical genre. Disc Jockeys do not define new musical genres.

This n that.

There is an organic life form in the same dwelling as me that claims she "loves dubstep."

She also swears that Whataburger is "the best burger ever" and thinks chicken alfredo is a flavor filled symphony and re-enacts the scene from "When Harry Met Sally" every time she has it.

Dubstep sounds like some hit "randomize" on some music editing software and ran with it.
