So someone copies some art from a video game? And this is supposed to be impressive?

But I bet he can't Triforce

yeah, i don't really get the point of this. seems like a colossal waste of time. i mean if it was just a tool to learn how to do something in PS i suppose but then you could stop after a couple.

Wasn't nearly as cool as I was expecting it to be, but was still just kind of neat to look at that games I've played and see if I recognized them all. I guess I was expecting more an "artistic rendition" of the shields in a different style than that.

I look forward to using this shield in photoshops:

Really? This got a greenlight?!?

ryant123: I remember there being only three shields in A Link to the Past.

I was thinking the same thing. Must be in one of the Gameboy remakes or something.

Also, while I'm here, the Shield mechanics in Skyward Sword sucked. There was no reason to add a damage meter except to legitimize the make-work "Find 3 desert scarabs to somehow make your iron shield stronger". if you accidentally broke it.

Nice art, subby. Not very professional but keep at it and you'll get there some day.

Keep reaching for the stars!

I was thinking "neat" at the first five words, expecting some cosplayer built replicas, and then I sighed.

I just beat Skyward Sword with the purple "Goddess shield." Apparently, after 50+ hours, if I wanted to spend another one or two hours beating boss after boss in a marathon session I could earn the cool sword, but the hell with that.

I was hoping for hyper-realistic photoshop paintings of the shields.

Yeah, it didn't really amount to much. It was probably a piece of cake after they figured out how to do the first two or three.

I think it's pretty cool that Link's bird in Skyward Sword shows up on some of the later Hyrule shields.

That and a shield.. You can get the Hyrulian shield that way too. But there is no cooler sword then the Master Sword anyways. And that includes Major's Fairy Sword too.

Only if you made simple vector drawings of maps from Doom. Otherwise, no.

First off, possible spoiler alert.

Secondly, no other swords, But you do get the unbreakable shield after 8 (of 12) bosses. That's actually to your advantage to do as early as possible; since the bosses (except the first) are chosen at random and you're not allowed to heal after each fight. If you've already beaten the game though, I wouldn't bother. On the other hand, I calculate a 100% probability that I'd do the entire boss rush three times in a row if the final prize was getting that blue/purple creature thing to just shut the hell up and let me play.

I think it was just an update on the graphics. Thats all. And even then, its still its 16 bit goodness. They just made it a little more clearer due to a better screen resolution. Thats all. Nothing else was added and if I heard correctly, even the secret room is still in the game.

The Hylian Shield would be a God send in Hero Mode... An unbreakable shield is a great thing.

True. But until you can get it, buy and equip the heart medallion thingy. Enemies still won't drop any hearts, but pots and plants sometimes will.

Thanks.. Was disappointed that none of my equipment carried over though... All that money and hunting to get the goddess shield and I cant use it in Heroic mode... I even had all the medallions too.

I'm going to be the one guy in the thread to say I liked this.

Sure some were repeats, and the art isn't all masterworks, but I like living in a world where a artist's rendering of um...renders of Link's shields exists.

Plus, that Hylian shield is BAD.ASS. I never get tired of looking at that thing. It's a perfect marriage of style and simplicity.

Tyrone Slothrop: So someone copies some art from a video game? And this is supposed to be impressive?

Copy is an ignorant and insulting way to describe it, implying it's some kind of hack cut/copy/paste job. Each shield was rendered from multiple pieces and measured by eye. Whether your dislike it or not, get it right. Also, who said it was supposed to be impressive? Better yet, how did it even get posted here?

frepnog: yeah, i don't really get the point of this. seems like a colossal waste of time. i mean if it was just a tool to learn how to do something in PS i suppose but then you could stop after a couple.

What's not to get? You're just about there. They were nothing more than Photoshop experiments that led to a set as respect towards 25 years of Zelda. Creating and studying things is far from a waste of time, there are far more unproductive things in this world. The funny thing is, it only started as a couple and then others asked if I would recreate the whole set and here we are.

FarkGrudge: Wasn't nearly as cool as I was expecting it to be, but was still just kind of neat to look at that games I've played and see if I recognized them all. I guess I was expecting more an "artistic rendition" of the shields in a different style than that.

Ah, expectations can always be misleading. If you had read the word "recreates" (as in replicate) in the title, not remakes, you should have known what was coming.

ryant123: I remember there being only three shields in A Link to the Past.

You're right, there were only three in the game. The blue shield with the golden bird crest is from the official artwork for A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening.

wildstarr: So this is my first time... *deep breath*...

I'm just as confused as you are about this.

King Keepo: wildstarr: I was hoping for hyper-realistic photoshop paintings of the shields.

Well duh, they're shields. Such things aren't very complex. Recreating a Game Boy http://fav.me/d3egtce and PS3 controller http://fav.me/d3hyk2t in a way to make them look somewhat real is an actual challenge. As for the simple looking art, for the shield set, that was intentional. I wanted them to look mostly accurate to the concept art, except with a little more detail.

Falco09: I think it's pretty cool that Link's bird in Skyward Sword shows up on some of the later Hyrule shields.

Ditto. The presence of the bird always puzzled me until Skyward Sword was announced.

The in-game sprite was round, not the official art, which is what I referenced. As for scale, I never set the ALTTP shields next together. Don't let the thumbnail links throw you off, that's simply how the deviantART site renders them. I'm just as interested in how the shields size up to each other as you are, but no one knows for sure. My guesstimates can be found in these wallpapers http://fav.me/d4knxdj http://fav.me/d4l4gfw

Fubini: Tyrone Slothrop: So someone copies some art from a video game? And this is supposed to be impressive?

I referenced all the official artwork that I could dig up, not just the booklets. In the case of Phantom Hourglass, I was forced to make do with the in game sprite. As to the almost exact copies, remark, thank you. That was my goal, to recreate them as accurately as possible, using my eyes to measure them.

kagemaru026: gee, it sure is BOOOORRRING around here.

Perhaps you can take a break from the CD-i and internet to play outside.

Actually, the Game Boy Advance has a lower resolution than the Super NES. That's why the ALTTP/Four Swords port pans and scans through the scene. I kind of wish they hadn't renamed Chris Houlihan room to Top Secret Room.

Thank you. I don't understand the negative atmosphere here, when the title clearly states what was done. Maybe everyone's expectations got carried away or something.

You took some art from a videogame and redrew it. I'm pretty sure any slightly artistically-inclined 10-year-old gamer has done the same thing. I certainly have. But you HAD to be that guy who comes on this site to reply to EVERYONE who made fun of your pointless exercise, which crosses the line from "unremarkable" to "laughable". By rule of internet law, we've earned the right to mock everything you do from now on.

You're right though... I couldn't imagine comparing my maps to whatever this crap is.

Last I checked, rendering things with vectors/vexels is a completely different skill than drawing (which I also do). But I'll allow the ignorant card on that. Internet law? What kind of childish thing is that. There's nothing wrong with replying to others, the internet is all about communication if you haven't heard. If you want to childishly mock, that's fine. But it's very unbecoming if you're an adult. Everyone is free to their opinion and I respect that. However, it's annoying when someone speaks foolishly and without thought. Have fun with your Doom maps and mocking, I'm sure your parents are proud. :)

I see you just joined up....

Go to the politics tab, and click on a thread with a high number. Read. These are the people you are dealing with, most times we are at the very least, childish. See also, ignorant, violent, ITGish, catty, juvenile, inflammatory, racist, and stupid, good people. Farkers are also some of the most intelligent, helpful, funny, interesting, caring people I have ever come across on the net. You will need plenty of "grains of salt" and "tongues in cheeks", although we usually have plenty of butthurt and righteous indignation, but feel free to pile on. IMHO this is one of if not the best site on the web, the people here keep me amused to no end and it remains the only site I come to for the member comments over the actual content. Farkers have the uncanny ability to prove me wrong and teach me shiat at the same time, I try to do the same when I can. Take nothing seriously, IMHO, we're all here to have fun, learn, argue, and pretend we can kick biblical amounts of ass. So in conclusion......
