(I Heart Chaos) Cool The twelve minute short film from Tom and Jerry animator Gene Deitch has finally made its way onto the internets. This was supposed to have been made into a full length feature at one point, but sometimes the world is a cruel place   (iheartchaos.com) divider line 35

This must be a story board demo. It's not animated,
(None of the characters MOVE.)

They barely moved in the Tom and Jerry cartoons he produced. Seriously, the Deitch shorts are probably best watched on LSD. I know that even when I was a kid and saw them for the first time my reaction was "what the hell is this?!" You almost have to be tripping balls to enjoy them. The animation was hideous, the sound execrable, and the stories combined with everything made it absolutely surreal.

This is crap. Does the Tolkien estate even know this abomination was done?

Where's the black woman speaking Steppenfetchit? The Hobbit needs her.

Yeah, it's cool that the movie was never made, because the short is utter bull

The "Made in Hollywood, USA" at the end of his shorts was a lie.

Gene Deitch explains it himself here (new window). Weird tale, and the context is interesting.

Every other website that posted this explained that it was a move to maintain the movie rights so the owner could sell them for a lot of money without having to actually make the movie.

I rather like the Ballantine Adult Fantasy vibe of the art, but overall it is probably
a good thing that this was never actually made.

The Princess?? WTF is this sh*t?

I mean, if you're going to tell The Hobbit, get it right.
The Rankin-Bass animated version wasn't terrible, though the character design was a bit..odd.

Read Deitch's story - I kinda feel bad for the guy. He gets handed a book and told "here's a children's book, make a movie out of it." So he does the script and makes a children's movie out of it, taking a LOT of liberties while doing so, and then midway through, the THREE VOLUMES of mythological context come out in paperback.

"We were well into the Hobbit screenplay when The Lord of The Rings came out in paperback editions. Having assumed there was only The Hobbit to contend with, and following Snyder's [the producer's] wish, we had taken some liberties with the story that a few years later would be grounds for burning at the stake. For example, I had introduced a series of songs, changed some of the characters' names, played loosely with the plot, and even created a girl character, a Princess no less, to go along on the quest, and to eventually overcome Bilbo Baggins' bachelorhood! I could Hollywoodize as well as the next man..."

Then you get told "Make the movie in thirty days."

Wrong place, wrong time. It was bad enough for him that he'd made the wrong Tom & Jerrys; now he gets to be the guy that made the wrong Hobbit.

BEWARE - this is not the animator of the 'good' Tom and Jerrys. This is the guy who did the low budget, trippy crap that came later, from halfway behind the iron curtain. Those Simpsons 'Worker and Parasite' knockoff cartoons were better than what that starbucks-barista-wannabe did to Tom and Jerry, imho.

I thought the same thing when I was a kid. I especially remember the sound effects being bizarre. Deitch Tom and Jerry is not Best Tom and Jerry.

Tom & Jerry sucked big donkey balls, so there's that.

Never liked the cartoons with duplicitous hypocrite bastards such as Jerry and Tweety winning the day, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

it was grating and infuriating. Probably encouraged kids to be that way, which makes sense considering how insufferable baby boomers tend to be.

Anybody remember the Gold Key Star Trek comics? They were written and drawn by people who had never seen the show and only had a handful of publicity photographs to work from. This 12 minute birth defect of Deitch's makes that look like Shakespeare's handiwork.

Unfortunately, there WAS a Tom and Jerry movie.

In it, they......they....they.....Tom and Jerry sing........about......friendship.

Tom and Jerry SING about the greatness of FRIENDSHIP.

/and then the movie became about the daughter of Indiana Jones

The Russians tried to do the same thing. Here are the first 6 minutes of what would have been a Russian animated feature adaptation of "The Hobbit" in the early 1990s:

Make sure the "CC" button in the above right of the video is selected, so that you can see the subtitles.

Jerry lost every once in a while, but I'll agree that Tweety was annoying.

Tweety was a Warner character. He was matched up against Sylvester not Tom. Jerry teamed up with several birds but I'm not sure any of them ever had a name.

The "Made in Hollywood, USA" blurb didn't appear on the Deitch shorts.

Thanks!

That appeals to my age group even if I don't remember that one.

/hint: the "54" attache to my screen name refers to my birth year.

Again, thanks!

Pal, nobody's saying Jerry and Tweety were together against Tom, we know one is MGM and the other Warner, but that Jerry and Tweety were annoying little bastards and their schtick got old after a while.

Tom & Jerry got better when they started working together.

BTW, why is it was a bulldog with a spike collar named Spike befriending opposing Tom and Sylvester in their respective cartoons? And why did the dogs team up with the bird/mouse?

But yeah, Jerry at least had some charm. Tweety was PURE UNADULTERATED PRICKNESS.

The best chase cartoon was, of course, Wile E. Coyote vs The Road Runner. It was much more bearable since Road Runner had physical abilities that made him formidable instead of just being a manipulative jerk like the other two. The fact that it was a mute cartoon helped since we didn't have to suffer the indignity of listening to Jerry/Tweety bullshiat. Plus Road Runner was a guy who ran and didn't mess with anybody. He didn't care about Coyote at all. Jerry and Tweety were starting crap all day just to annoy the cats.

Also, I'm a cat lover so seeing the cats shown as the bad guys didn't sit well with me. Dunno why people from the 30s/40s/50s had something against cats... Always painting them as cowards and evil.

That's why I loved this little show:

www.tvshowsondvd.com

Now THAT's a cool cat. He didn't take shiat from nobody and made the bulldog Spike archetype his biatch.

the main two birds are the woodpecker baby and quacker the little duck.

tweety was never in a Tom and Jerry Cartoon.
