I've listened to it several times today..I love it.

Two things:

A) VH is required, apparently, to have a tubby bass player.

B) DLR still can't lip-synch for shiat.

It cracks me up. Roth was a big deal back in the day. Now he looks just like an old Jewish guy.

finally, dozens of people have been waiting for this!

Like it or not, Sammy Hagar was Van Halen. Without him, VH would still be known as a group who's last big hit was available on an eight track.

They should've had at least one shot of a tattoo in the video, maybe on a chick or something.

Yeah, but this one seems to have noticed the other strings.

Well, it kinda reminds me of the filler songs on DLR's solo albums. I'm not saying it's bad (I'm not even saying that I don't like it), but it really isn't very catchy and the music feels a little generic. It sounds like VH I guess, but it just isn't working for me. I'm betting there is going to be some stuff on the album that I do like though, because that was far from a disaster of any sort.

/I'll go with "cautiously optimistic"

1/10

Can't say Sammy was VH when they were a multiple platinum selling act before him. I would have gone with "Like it or not, Sammy Hagar was an upgrade from David Lee Roth. This new song proves it."

It's still bullshiat, but it's more believable bullshiat.

Video was kinda cheap, but a throwback to their earlier videos... Song was OK, not as 'sex, drugs, rock n roll' edgy that DLR-era VH was known for, but not bad for ~30 years since they started. One thing to keep in mind is they are all getting up there in years, and lead hard lives. If Dave were to hop off the stage like he did back in the day, he'd end up in the ICU!

Agreed. The song is pretty crappy, but it would be a lot more "Van Halen-esque" with better backing vocals on the chorus.

Oh well.

Agreed with the statement above about being kinda generic, but not awful. The solo sounded good. Eddie might have been sober when he recorded it. I really like the song "Mean Wise Magic' they did in 1995 so I'm hoping there will be a little more progressive stuff on the new album, as opposed to this song.

/also agree that they need Michael Anthony

That wasn't quite Bieber bad but I sure hope that there are some better songs on the new album than this. If they made that song in 1980 it would have had at least 50% more energy.

/Overall I liked Van Hagar more than Van Roth. Although Jump and Panama are the two best songs by either incarnation.

I agree it is indeed cheese. Please allow me to submit:

Premise: Roth-era Van Halen ('78-'84) is awesome.
Premise: David Lee Roth performs all songs like some cheesy lounge singer.
Premise: "Tattoo" is cheesy.
Conclusion: "Tattoo" is awesome.

Take a song like Beautiful Girls. It is classic VH and awesome. I think some of us will agree on this point. But DLR is a gigantic cheese ball. I think some will agree here, too. His delivery on BG is par for the course: hella cheesy. Miraculously, this doesn't stop it from being awesome. In fact, I thought part of the allure to Roth-fronted VH was the cheese factor: spandex, spin kicks and everything. I don't hear anything out of the ordinary on Tattoo. Classic VH cheese fest.

/I like this song.

Van Halen was lucky they got as big as they did considering they had a one dimensional singer paired with a one dimensional guitarist.

The luck is that each of the guys' one dimensions were very bright and colorful, especially for the time. No one had really played guitar like Edward before, at least not on such an international stage. Dave was the perfect front man for that style of music, even if he did steal his entire act from Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas.

But Edward could never master any other style of playing than his own. He can't play blues, or pop, or folk, or alternative because no matter what he does, he always sounds like Edward Van Halen playing Edward Van Halen licks in Edward Van Halen style. But his limited genre-hopping abilities still far outweigh Roth's talent, which is firmly rooted in one particular style of music (he was fooling no one with his bluegrass Van Halen music.)

The time for this style of music is over, and has been for 25 years. Van Hagar was a further bastardization of that style, morphing it into pop-radio friendly Whitesnake-style ballad crap. It was as if when Roth left, he took Edward's balls with him. Van Halen, as limited as it was, was at least exciting. Van Hagar was like putting a half-sucked on lifesaver mint in your mouth. Weak, and somewhat nauseating.

This new stuff might be fun, and it certainly can't be any worse than Van Hagar, but it isn't Van Halen, as that magic can never be recreated, even if Michael Anthony were back in the band. Time has exposed the limitations of the band members, and it's just not as good anymore.

2012-01-10 08:36:57 PM
That sounded just like Sammy Hagar's new band, Chickenfoot.

meh, my guilty pleasure music is the Van Hagar era synth rock of the 80's and 90's. That's what I grew up to so that's just what I liked I guess. I appreciate Eddies talent on the guitar but the earlier stuff (including Unchained) seemed like he was trying to make his guitar do too much.

But that's just me.

Not a bad song. Eddie's son just ruins the whole vibe though. He looks very out of place. Almost like he filling in for a veteran bass player and has no chance of filling his shoes.

Mugato: AdolfOliverPanties: He can't play blues, or pop, or folk, or alternative

What does that even mean? Rock is blues. I think his keyboard work covers pop, why the fark would he want to play folk and WTF is "alternative"?

Rock can be blues, but blues is not always rock. There is an EP, the Brian May Starfleet Project, where EVH plays. They do a blues song called "Let Me Out," and Edward is terrible as a blues guitarist. All he could play were EVH licks over a true blues song and it was not a good mix. Part of playing the blues is knowing what not to play. For the record, Brian May isn't all that great at blues either, but at least he can play in more than one style.

My point was that Edward plays Edward licks no matter what song he is playing on. What is alternative? I guess that was a bit of a poser thing for me to add. Unnecessary. I just meant different than standard AOR friendly pop rock, which is what VH turned into. They were pop-metal at first and then went full on fruitcake-ballad pop with the keyboards and Sammy.

Folk may have been the wrong word. I am referring to acoustic style stuff like Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, even Queen would do at times. These bands could mix in some other instruments, some other arrangement styles, some other genres of music and make their own distinctive mark on it. Van Halen could not.

Edward's style really only fits pop-metal or pop-metal ballads. That was really my point. At the time VH broke, no one else sounded like them. It was new and exciting.

That style has been out there for 30+ years now. And the limitations of their style of music is telling.
