Unfortunately, it seems that cancer does whatever the fark it wants. I HATE the sun, hate summer, have NEVER had a tan, and somehow, one of my Irish-inherited moles turned to cancer an I had to have surgery. It just... did. Nobody could explain why since I despise exposure to the sun and it was on my upper thigh that never, ever would have been exposed to the sun since I hibernate in summer,

I am completely certain this article is too advanced for fark. The title is a lame joke, not a finding based on the human diet.

Jesus, MedicalExpress.com really needs to do something about their stylesheets - nothing like an article opening up with a large inline ad for a Samsung Galaxy S.

This. As much as we know about cancer, we still know so very little. Hell, what if it is just an inevitable consequence of the greatly extended lifespan we have now as opposed to 100 years ago?

I just RTFA and have no idea of what it said. A translation for those of us without biology degrees would be Splenda.

From the look of it, cancer cells can continue to replicate in low oxygen environments (like inside tumours) by utilising glutamine instead of glucose.

It is basically a 'proof of concept' idea that perhaps glutamine inhibitors can be used to aid in combating cancer.

As above, it has nothing to do with sugar, sugar-free drinks or even a sugar-free diet.

\would be Splenda I see what you did there :)

Tumors are super-fast growing so they eat up glucose from your bloodstream, and they hog a lot of your blood vessels, so it's thought that they primarily rely on the energy in glucose to proliferate uncontrollably. Thus the thought follows that you can starve your cancer (limit its growth) by reducing / eliminating sugar (glucose) intake, or by using a drug to block tumors from taking up sugars.

However, cells (cancerous and non cancerous) have lots of ways of making food. Turns out that in the absence of sugar, tumors can also make food from amino acids (glutamine, specifically) and grow just fine. Thus, tumors (or cancer cells) can persist even when nutrient and oxygen deprived.

So all in all, bummer. Stupid cancer. Grows like a weed.

No thank you. I trust implicitly that the submitter would never violate the sanctity of Fark by submitting an inaccurate, borderline false headline just for the sake of a greenlight.

Having never experienced (and having no wish to) this so-called "sugar-free diet," this affects me not at all.

All hail sugar, second only to butter.

Lucky for you, I do have a biology degree.

The article starts by saying that cancer cells like to use a lot of sugar for energy, but that doesn't have a damn thing to do with the research.

Once cancer cells form tumors, their growth blocks off oxygen and sugar that they would normally consume, but ha ha! They have an alternate energy source.

Now the relevant reseach...if you block the ability to break down the alternate energy source, the growth of the tumor is slowed as a result.

The Pro Cancer Foundation* recommends drinking plenty of Diet Fresca.
Also, smoking, eschewing sunscreen and getting xrays just for fun.

Gooooo cancer!

It's a numbers game; what I refer to as a "backwards lottery". You know how one person might spend his life savings on lottery tickets and win nothing, while another might win the jackpot on the first try? Same thing in reverse; some people can go out of their way to avoid cancer and get it anyway; others can take all the risks and live to 90. At this point, most idiots think "pff, scientists don't know anything" and live impulsively.

The thing to keep in mind is that the odds eventually become statistics. A 90% chance is NOT a sure thing, but only the retard thinks 90% and 10% are the same.

Came here to say this. Not an earth-shattering finding, but, as the article concludes, there should be lots of slots open to take part in phase I anti-glutaminase drug trials. Of course, if a tumor is using glutamininase because it is virtually cut off from the bloodstream, the usual methods of drug delivery won't be any more effective than they are currently.
