Interesting that this appears to be one of the few non-party-line issues to be discussed. Also disheartening that the supporters outnumber the opponents 4 to 1.

I can't figure out what the f*ck is going on with that website.

Wendy's Chili: I can't figure out what the f*ck is going on with that website.

What's to figure out? There's a list of Congressman on the left who say they support SOPA, and a list of them on the right who've said they won't. If you click on their picture it shows how much entertainment and tech money was donated to their campaigns.

Example: find Harry Reid and check out the bag of loot he got.

That's a really interactive list of who's who. Weird to see Pelosi, Paul Ryan, and Rand Paul vs. Boxer, Franken and Inhofe. The "$ Difference" options were also really interesting.

So bizarre to see so much red and blue on both sides. Also: Wow, I'm disappointed in you Franken, although I guess his background is media-related, which is going to skew on this.

2012-01-10 04:29:31 PM
Goddamn that's a crazy list. Both of my Senators are for it, but so are Boxer, Feinstein, and Franken who should really all know better.

Also strange to see Reid for it but Pelosi against it.

make me some tea: Interesting that this appears to be one of the few non-party-line issues to be discussed. Also disheartening that the supporters outnumber the opponents 4 to 1.

Well sure. Government overreach is something both sides agree on. Despite their marketing.

2012-01-10 04:35:29 PM
I'm actually surprised that mine is opposed to it.

Well, not so much surprised that he's opposed to SOPA in particular, but that he's taking a stand against or for anything generally.

/He's usually a predictable party-line vote.

SphericalTime: Wow, I'm disappointed in you Franken, although I guess his background is media-related, which is going to skew on this.

I'll give Franken a pass on that because it's a showbiz culture thing, but the rest of em should be ashamed of themselves. Harry Reid got $500K from entertainment donations alone. No wonder he's pushing it in the Senate.

2012-01-10 04:43:30 PM
Surprise surprise, my congressman is for it.

I guess it just loads wrong in my browser because all I see is a hot mess and command buttons that don't do anything when you click on the.

Pelosi and Bachmann on the same side about an issue. Maybe the Mayans were right.

Who stands to benefit from SOPA? Is it only the RIAA and MPAA?

How come big business isn't defending this?

2012-01-10 04:50:01 PM
Wow. One of my two Senators opposes it, and the other one and my Representative are not listed on either side. This could be a golden age for Kansas.

I don't see Gabby Giffords on there. But Moran is. Is it safe to say Moran got Gifford's brain?

GAT_00: Boxer, Feinstein, and Franken who should really all know better.

I'm not surprised to see the California Senators are for something that the movie industry wants.

Guidette Frankentits: Who stands to benefit from SOPA? Is it only the RIAA and MPAA?

Any company with intellectual property stands to potentially benefit from this... As an example, some have pointed to "big pharma" as being one of the beneficiaries, which seems weird when you're talking about online piracy and copyright. The argument is that they can use SOPA to protect against counterfeit drug manufacturers who sell "Biagra" and "Lipitur" online.

2012-01-10 04:53:33 PM
Weird. I see one of my senators (Wyden) opposes it, but the other (Merkley) doesn't appear in either camp.

SOPA is an abomination.

The presence of Sens. Blumenthal and Lieberman on that list makes me angry.

2012-01-10 04:57:05 PM
I am genuinely curious how many of those have chosen their positions purely out of knowledge of the issue and purpose of the bill, or because a lobbyist/donor/etc told them what their preferred course of action might be.
Whether for or against, don't care. I want to know how many of our congress critters can comprehend.

Your state's opposed to it because they think that anything relating to carrying information over wires is the Devil's work.

They could think it's because the bill will bring Hitler back to life, bestow upon him immortality, and install him as Supreme Dictator-for-Life, and I would be okay with it.

Sen. Boxer has received 1.3m in the past three years from the relating industries. No idea why she would be in a co-sponsor of this bill.

Sen. Reid only one million. He needs to try harder.

I've often noticed that people who oppose SOPA are infavor of net-neturality. It's like they don't really understand the underlying business models that make these things possible. and profitable.

2012-01-10 05:02:00 PM
Very disappointed in Franken.

2012-01-10 05:05:01 PM
I've never seen an issue with so much unity in the real world (and on Fark) on one side, and simultaneously so many congress persons on the other side. Usually there's the same ratio of for/against+smattering of trolls as the actual division of votes. But in this case NOBODY seems to want it, EXCEPT for this bunch of politicians. Weird.

2012-01-10 05:05:01 PM
Very sad to see Franken on the supporters list. I thought better of him.

Also very sad to see Hagan on the supporters list, because I voted for her. I've had buyers remorse over that for a while, but she was still (I suppose) better than the alternative.

I'm kinda sad they couldn't find a way to MAKE this a partisan issue. The aisle crossing on this might actually get it passed.

Looks like Dick Durbin is getting another email from me because I know it changes his mind. That's why we have term limits and solely publicly funded elections.

But I figure if enough people flood their Congressperson's inbox with calls and letters and emails, maybe eventually they'll change their mind.

Saners: Sen. Boxer has received 1.3m in the past three years from the relating industries. No idea why she would be in a co-sponsor of this bill.

She's a Senator from California, which has 90% of the related industries... It's not really corruption if they actually are your constituents.

Nice to see that at least one of my Senators, Maria Cantwell is against it.

So...what of Patty Murray? Is she just going to sit this one out?

A perfectly noble and just way to catch people who are acting dangerously.

I'm not sure why broad bipartisan support surprises people. This is a case of a wealthy special interest screwing over the public at large. That is typically the sort of thing both parties agree on.

I would say that the ones for it are generally misunderstanding the implications and/or influenced by entertainment money, the ones undecided don't understand it/don't care, and the ones against it realize that there's a first amendment problem with this thing, at a minimum.

In addition to Hollywood, they've likely heard from the San Fernando Valley... not that they'd admit it.
