Why would you stop after hitting a deer? I mean, if your car still runs, that is. What, are you going to get his insurance information? Give him first aid? Facepunch him for hitting you? I'll give 10:1 odds that the guy was screwed by his own ignorance of his 4th amendment rights. He most likely answered "uhh, sure" to the officer's "is it cool if I take a look inside your vehicle bro?"

If the driver was actually clearly high while driving, he may have had probable cause to do the search but hitting a deer and not inspecting for damage is not a crime.

My most recent encounter with one of these vermin was him jumping into the passenger door of my car while I was doing 60 on the highway. Just jumped right the fark into me. Unfortunately, he lived. I wish they'd let people hunt the deer in this area. They're thick as flies on shiat around here.

I'm actually on chat with a research librarian at the moment, and it doesn't seem that OR has a law requiring you to report striking a deer, though you're encouraged to if it represents a road hazard. I know some states require you to in order to prevent "poaching" by taking the roadkill deer home for butchering.

Exactly my rationale when we were towing the rallycross car to Tulsa this October. Halfway through Missouri, pitch black, maybe 3am, a deer jumps out at the truck. We figure he was trying to run across the road right after the truck passed by. The deer got it exactly right, too bad he didn't see the trailer.

The deer took out the tire carrier, spewed thick goopy blood everywhere, and bounced off of the car, mangling the driver's door in the process.

My thoughts, after OH FARK A DEER *thump* : Well, I don't see any smoke or hear any scraping noises, so we're not going to blow a tire. We'll see what the deer did at the next fuel stop.

We weren't exactly in a position to stop anyway as our tow rig was woefully underpowered for driving through the non-flat land. And what were we supposed to do, shoot the deer? We didn't have any firearms. I suppose we could have doubled back and tried to beat an angry, scared wild animal to death with a 1' long hammer, but that sounds like the first step towards being a FARK headline...
