I'll also enjoy the ability to drive in any one direction and not end up in the same spot after a couple of hours.

What winter?

2012-01-10 02:54:06 PM
I would enjoy winter if we'd just get some snow.

2012-01-10 02:57:53 PM
I like the cold and the fact that the sun is lower on the horizon and the shorter days. It means I can be outside for longer now.

but what about the ability to never get lost for more than 2 hours?

I don't think I can every enjoy Hawaii. It's just too warm and sunny. Plus, I don't like beaches.

2012-01-10 02:59:45 PM
Seriously... What winter?
We have snow for like ONE day so far this winter in New York City. I thought, "Cool, Ski time." Nope, one day snow and it was incredibly warm in the evening of the same day.

2012-01-10 02:59:46 PM
What has also helped Hawaii is that they did not have much state debt up to this point (clocks in at about $8,500 per citizen). This is pretty close to the national average for states. However, they do have a pretty big unfunded pension obligation of about $7 Billion that they need to correct and that could eventually bite them in the arse.

Also, tourism can be a very fickle buisness.

James!: What winter?

This. I'm in northern MN and it's 45 degrees outside right now. And we haven't had enough snow to even cover the grass yet.

I can assure you it's not cold here in San Francsico either. I mean, no colder than usual. It certainly doesn't feel like winter.

Things are booming since the Department of State started charging a $175,000 "Moran Surcharge" to search the birth certificate files.

Amazingly, the real estate bust in 2007/2007 didn't hit us too bad either. Unemployment has always been lower than the national average because our cost of living is off the charts. If you live on Oahu, you don't work and you don't have an accommodating family or friend to house you, you will probably have to live in a shelter or on the streets. And now, they're cracking down on the street people.

Some idiots take a plane here with the romantic notion that they'll live on the beach. Once they get the crap kicked out of them, they wise up and move back to the mainland. It's kind of hilarious, really.

2012-01-10 03:16:45 PM
took my kids to the beach January 2, the water was warm. Thats a plus of living in Hawaii. There are many many downsides though most having to do with homes, groceries and gas costing an arm and a leg.

/and its the governments own damn fault the public worker pensions are underfunded. A few decades back some idiot wrote legislation that basically said every year the stock market does good the government does not have to pay into the retirement system. They also made many many quesitonable investments over the years.

I'll be going there in Feb. Hopefully by the time I come back to CT, the winter will have arrived.

You want the weather for Hawaii? I used to live there, so I know what their weather forecast is most of the time:

"High in the mid 80's, low in the mid 70's, some windward and mauka showers".

I was on Maui a couple months ago and there are a lot fewer Shave Ice kiosks.

mekki: And doesn't Hawaii have universal healthcare for its residence? Fark it, I have to move.

Not exactly. If you work at least 20 hours/week for an employer, they need to provide you coverage, though you may have to pay a portion of it. Many employers get around this law by hiring part-timers who work no more than 19.5 hours/week.

I was born and raised in Vegas. The weather is SOOO boring there. Sun, pretty much every day. Although it's nice in the winter. You look forward to the odd thunderstorm when everything floods because they're a spectacle.

For those living on any of the Hawaiian islands: Are all places in Hawaii as expensive as Honolulu?

Or is Honolulu just out there?

I would love to live in Hawaii as would many but my Honolulu experience showed me:

a) Honolulu is farking expensive
b) Honolulu has a farking huge gap between rich and poor

To me growing up New York Honolulu isn't that expensive
I also have friends that run the gamut from sales clerks to millionaire business owners
the outer island are even more expensive... unless you live the island way,
catch fish and eat rice
don't worry about getting a new car every year
eat plate lunch,
don't even try for a glitzy address

No. Everything on Maui is far more expensive. But as a longtime resident, you quickly learn when and where to buy certain things so that you get the best deals.

So I'm strongly considering moving to Hawaii for school next year. I get the GI bill, so tuition isn't a concern. Plus they give me a bit of a living allowance during school months. I'm single, with no kids so I don't have much baggage. Plus, I've lived on Kodiak island in Alaska for a couple years, so I know a little about living on an island.

Anyone from Hawaii tell me a little about UH and HPU? Any things I should plan for or be aware of (I'm aware of the cost of living)?

HPU has a reciprocal agreement with the Swedish government, so you guessed it lots of blond Swedish tail.

UH.has a nice campus

I'm assuming UH Manoa? If so, it's a nice state school. The dorms are a little cramped, but they're close to the classrooms so you'll have an easy walk. Manoa is a nice neighborhood, and there are a lot of stores nearby to get stuff. Most students get around by bike or moped. It rains most days in Manoa, but it's usually a light afternoon rain so it's not usually disruptive. Unlike a lot of mainland schools, UH Manoa is more of a commuter campus, so there aren't as many evening/weekend campus activities as you would find in most mainland schools. I got my B.A. at UHM back in '89 and I live about 1/2 mile from campus.

I got my MBA at HPU. HPU is split in two. Most business and general studies classes are taught in downtown. When I went there, only a small percentage of students were from Hawaii - most were foreign, usually from China or Japan. Although the school isn't rated highly in academics, I had some very good professors. Many of them had years of work experience before they came there to teach, so I felt that practical knowledge was very valuable.

The other campus is on the windward side of the island. I didn't take any classes there, but I've visited there and it looks nice. I think it's mostly nursing and other science majors at that campus.

Things to be aware of: if you're white, don't spend a lot of time in Waianae, Nanakuli or the poorer parts of Kalihi and Palolo, especially at night.

I do have to say, since our main engines are tourism (white people spending money on luxury!) and agriculture (really, what can't you get cheaper from Venezuela or Brazil these days?), I thought by now we'd be up shiat creek. I thought we'd look like Detroit-West. I wanted to get the holy hell out of here before it really all came crashing down.

...I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it didn't.

I mean, I sure as hell am not going to say I'm making money over here, but still.

mekki: And doesn't Hawaii have universal healthcare for its residence? Fark it, I have to move.

No, but what is universal is that employers must provide insurance to full time workers. So you know, once you manage to land a full time job, you're in it for at least the basics.

Seconded, especially the Waianae part.

Oddly enough, though, the only incident I had wasn't in those places, it was between Ala Wai Blvd and Kuhio Ave in Waikiki.
