I'm waiting for the wearable computing with monocular or binocular translucent display that I was promised in 1999, but have yet to materialize in anything close to marketable (except for the Xybernaut devices that died a quick death when the company folded after trying to make a market for itself).

Because their stuff isn't as impressive if you can see their rivals at the same time. Some of the stuff at CES is very slick, like Asus's 1080p Transformer prime, or Vizios new all in ones.

Not to mention Lg's ultra impressive 55 inch oled set...man is that pretty.

It wasn't a lack of enthusiasm, it was more like that it was low-rent. It was usually in just one hall and it was little more than a couple of hundred folding tables of people selling piles of DVDs (mostly pirated). There were usually a few production companies with half-assed decorations (usually just some curtain backdrops or whatever) and there would be a handful of actresses who were perfectly happy to have their picture taken and pretend to flirt a little, but it was generally barely worth going. The only reason we'd go was because it was a break from the 300k+ attendee Comdex madness. Plus, you know, they had boobies. I haven't been to any other adult expos, so I have nothing to compare it to, so maybe Adultdex really was the low-rent expo of the industry. Seems unlikely, given that it was Las Vegas.

I starting around '90 I went to Comdex every year for about 6 straight years. I remember the year before Comdex kicked out all the porn guys. We had normal multimedia vendors right across from porn booths showing their videos on giant screen monitors. I'm not a prude but it's pretty distracting to try and do business with that stuff in your face. Of course, the stars of said video would stand around the monitors while people would watch.

As I recall, they next year they had the porn all in the same hall off the main floor. They year after when Softbank bought Comdex, they just booted them out.

Meh. Don't buy one. My only complaint with the original Air was the price - it was priced based on the form factor rather than the internal components. The specs are now better and the price is lower, so I'mma thinking my next laptop will be an Air.

I just find the trend towards thinner and lighter laptops of existing formfactors to be terribly lazy. There are lots of user interfaces that are either 1) much friendlier to the user, or 2) much more interesting. But it seems like we're stuck just making things faster and lighter rather than trying something new.

Solution: Air plus a Thunderbolt monitor. Or if you want to be really sick, a Thunderbolt External GPU. (new window)
Hook that bad boy up to three or four 24" monitors on your desk, plus a full size keyboard and mouse, all via one cable. Pull it when you need to travel.

Buy a tiny SSD (128 GB = ~$200, and I personally wouldn't go a ton smaller than that) and stick it in the desktop for the OS and programs.

/That's the great part of desktops. Dead mobo on laptop = $1000 repair from Apple (Huzzah for warranty, because I'm on my 4th one). Dead mobo on Desktop = $250 for new mobo, and a few hours of my time to strip and rebuild my desktop.

There is a such thing as too early. The original MacBook Air was overpriced and blew ass.

Yet another example of revisionist-history fanboys ignoring all the improvements that were required for an Apple product to become successful, and pointing to the shiny POS launch model as if they hit it out of the park on day one.

Except that Ivy Bridge is coming out. So it'll be a powerful i5 or i7 22 nm CPU coupled with a midsize SSD, a small but quality screen, awesome battery life, and nearly instant bootup. (all for under $1000, because that's part of the definition acc. to Intel)

Or at least that's what the good ones will be.

It won't be useful to most as their only computer (lacking good GPU and big screen like you said), but I'd totally get one if I flew a lot for work as a second or third computer to go with the big desktop.

What exactly did I say that didn't happen? What part of history did I revise?

Did Apple release the Air in 2008?
Did people pan it for lacking a user-replaceable battery?
Did people pan it for the lack of optical drive?
Did people pan it for the lack of ports?

I'm not sure you actually know what "revisionist" means.

You can get all those in a MacBook Air for $1699. So yeah, a generic MacBook Air. Revolutionary.
