House wasn't up to code, was filled with termites, and couldn't withstand a weak hurricane. It would cost more to fix than to destroy and rebuild.
Note that she found these things out, she let Habitat for Humanity strip the useable appliances and hardware before it was demolished. Good for her.

What they said. Besides, that stuff used to happen all the time around here and is common elsewhere. It is her property. As long as she gets the proper approvals, who cares? It is her cash now.

Um, did you RTFA?
She had no idea there was an infestation until Habitat for Humanity starting tearing stuff out during the demolition. They informed her after the fact. As for withstanding hurricanes: it seems to have done well for the last 90 years.
The reason she tore the place down was because she's an exacting twat. I hate her and I hope she gets cholera.

I misspoke. She found the termites when she let HH tear stuff out because it wasn't up to code.

Parts of her old house are going into making many houses for people who otherwise wouldn't have one. Assuming that the parts being taken weren't infested, that's a good thing.
And she probably wanted polished marble where there was tile or something stupid like that.

So she is doing her part to stimulate the economy, create jobs, etc...
Would you rather her just put $$$ in stock fund?
So:
Spending money is bad
Saving/Investing money is bad
I guess the only thing that is good in some peoples' eyes is government confiscation of wealth and handing it out to those have no claim to it.

She let HH tear out he appliances and fixtures she didn't want, not the ones that weren't up to code. They discovered the house wasn't to code and had ants and termites during their stripping of the house.

did she also tear down the land?
from the assessor's office (from the comments). the land is worth 9.6M. The house is $2.4M.
She let HH take a bunch of stuff out of the house first.

To put her buying power in perspective, her cost to tear down a $12M dollar house is equivilant to your cost to vacation in hawaii for one week.

I fail to be outraged by this. Rich people knock buildings down all the time. At least she let some of it be salvaged beforehand. And Habitat for Humanity can salvage quite a bit of useful stuff to either use or sell in their Re-Stores, like bathtubs, fixtures, appliances, marble, tile, cabinets, carpet, etc. When I worked doing estate sales one family had them come in before the house was torn down (they wanted to build a new house on the land of their grandma's estate and the house was old and decrepit anyway). I was surprise the amount of stuff they salvaged from a 1200 sq. ft. house. I can only image was they did with something that size.

But she didn't know that until after she started tearing it down.
She didn't base her decision on the safety of the house, she based it on wanting 9 bedrooms instead of 7 and a bigger basement with a wine cellar.
