So, not to go all hipster, but I don't watch TV anymore so I never get to see what new shows are coming out. Didn't know anything about this show until I read the article.

And it's only solidified my decision to remain TV free.

/ Seriously? Who the fark thought this was a good premise? Half a season, tops.
// It's not that I don't like TV, I just find I'll watch crap until my eyes bleed simply because I'm bored.

I normally don't comment on people's choices in entertainment, but really? REALLY?!

I want to say to all those people:

Paste's "20 best shows of 2011" list had Dexter, Bored to Death and HIMYM and didn't even rank Justified or South Park (which had a fantastic return to form this year).

/counting down the days to Justified's season 3 premiere

that list made my eyes bleed

I didn't even know about this show. But now that I do, I will now delete the channel it appears on from my remote so I don't even pass it accidentally. And for bearing me the news this show existed, subby will be covered in pitch and used to illuminate the next FARK Partytm.

my problem is the same basic problem i had with that movie White Chicks. (and no, i don't mean "being unfunny").

the guys do NOT look like females. at all. even a little. i understand this is comedy, but that's just too much of a disconnect.

rather than copy (badly?) Bosom Buddies, they should have gone another route --

either 1) keep the guys *very obviously* looking like guys -- beard stubble, deep voices, arm hair, and all -- but have the other characters keep reacting *as if* they were hawt nubile chicks. good comedy potential there, IMO.
--or--
2) use actual actresses to portray the guys in drag, overdubbed with the guys voices. sure that wouldn't be as funny, but it would be easier to watch.

you just can't tell me White Chicks wouldn't have been far more amusing with one of those approaches. same here.

Sad to say I did watch it the Rican joke was funny even though it was expected.

I hadn't heard of this until the article. Good job, manufactured outrage!

/will not watch anyway.

So its 'homophobic' because its insensitive to transgender? Transgender would find that statement, in and of itself, insulting.

2012-01-10 04:08:49 PM
I heard about it last August on NPR but assumed it was sort of a "the network has this pilot..." kind of thing and assumed it was dead on arrival. How wrong I was.

2012-01-10 04:14:55 PM
So, if it insults Christians, white men, or fat people it's,. "Hey!, It's only a TV show! It's just comedy/satire. It doesn't mean anything. If you don't like it, change the channel. It's not like anyone actually mimics what they see on TV."

But if it insults gays, transgendered, or ethnic minorities it's "Hey!, don't watch this! It portrays some groups of our society in a negative way! I mean, come on, TV is a role-model!! People learn about other groups and cultures via TV. People tend to mimic the behaviors they see on TV, they'll start to hate these groups."

It's always refreshing to know that TV can be both satire that shouldn't be taken seriously and a role model that instructs and informs.

It all depends on the intended audience, I guess.

Don't get me wrong, this looks like utter crap, but drug reps are almost ALWAYS attractive females - because most doctors are male. Sorry if reality is not politically correct.

Oh, and I can't dress in drag as a joke because there are GID people who are "forced" to dress in drag? You, and they, will get over it.

Holy shiat.....I just realized that one of them is Amaury Nolasco . How he could go from decent performances in Southland to this bullshiat is a mystery. Hard to believe the paycheck's bigger.

Its not even worth getting offended over, waste of energy from folks that probably just need the ink.

Methinks you may be overestimating the average American TV viewers taste and intelligence. Don't forget this ran for EIGHT seasons.

I dunno - if they made a show where the leads actually looked like attractive women (and thus were willing to turn on men in the audience, who would then get all confused and angry), based it not on an imaginary men-are-oppressed idea but committed full-in to the actual situation (yes, sex is the primary marketing tool of big pharma and they don't pretend otherwise) and just went for it, it's possible you could make a show worth seeing. But instead, this is safe, wink-wink-just-kidding middlebrow crap, aiming low and failing to reach it.

2012-01-10 08:00:14 PM
I hate to break it to Paste but that first one is reality. Drug reps are almost exclusively good looking females. Sexist or not that's how the buisness works

Well, if you'd bothered to read TFA, you would have seen that two of the complaints are that it insults white men and fat people. I think you're railing against the world as you imagine it and not as it appears, which is an obstacle to finding solutions.

This was the article that ultimately flipped my own opinion on the show. Quoted is the relevant bit:
s post, so if you're writing to say, "It's just a joke," save it.) If transgender people were on a full and equal footing with the rest of society, if we were completely respected as a minority group, if we had full protections under the law like those based on race or religion, then I suppose we could view it as a little good-natured ribbing and take our lumps the same as anyone else.

The problem is that we are not. Here are just some of the findings in a survey conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality. Transgender people surveyed:

Were four times more likely to have a household income of less than $10,000 a year

Had double the rate of unemployment

Had twice the rate of homelessness

Additionally, of the transgender people surveyed:

90 percent had experienced harassment or mistreatment on the job

47 percent had been fired, not hired, or denied promotion because of being transgender

71 percent had attempted to avoid discrimination by hiding their transition

16 percent had been forced to work in the underground economy

53 percent reported being harassed or disrespected in places of public accommodation

22 percent had been denied equal treatment by government agency or official

...This isn't a little, innocent jab at your best bud. This is kicking down people already at the bottom.

Work it is insulting to people with a working brain, conscience, or sense of humor.

T.rex: So its 'homophobic' because its insensitive to transgender? Transgender would find that statement, in and of itself, insulting.

Yeah! Now I'm offended by the article writer's implication that I as homosexy dude should be offended on behalf of transexual dudes who might be offended by the offensive stereotyping of guys in dress in this horribly offensive show.

Or something.

2012-01-11 03:09:47 AM
Yeah, I don't think most people are as thin-skinned as the article's writer seems to think they should be. Gay folk and cross-dressers aren't any more likely to be offended by being stereotyped in a sitcom than blue-collar workers, bachelors, office workers, or any other group that's been stereotyped in a sitcom.

I mean, come on, there's not a sitcom in existence that has any ingredients other than stereotypes. We're fine with gay/trans people getting the same disrespectful treatment as everyone else, we're not going to watch the show because it's a remake of Bosom Buddies and, therefore, terrible.

I guess that means Monty Python and Kids in the Hall were homophobic too. The bastards.

nyrB: I guess that means Monty Python and Kids in the Hall were homophobic too. The bastards.

And all the ancient Greeks and Shakespearean actors before the law was reversed allowing woman on stage. Last I checked, all female roles were played by men during Shakespeare's time. And its been that way for a few 100s... if not, 1000s of years.

The only reason not to watch a comedy show is if it's not funny.

Mrbogey: The only reason not to watch a comedy show is if it's not funny.

exactly. not watch it because it's a remake of bosom buddies? how short-sighted. they may share a similar premise - it's what's *done* with the premise that's the key.

nyrB: exactly. not watch it because it's a remake of bosom buddies? how short-sighted. they may share a similar premise - it's what's *done* with the premise that's the key.

To be clear though the premise is one thing. Nothing I've seen shows that it rises above Bosom Buddies. Nor have I seen anything about it that I thought was funny.

It doesn't matter if it's misogynist, racist, whatever. Is it funny? If not then don't watch.
