Quite ironically, Israel is getting ready to receive and shelter tens of thousands of Syrian Alawites (members of the current regime or their family) after Assad's fall (including members of Assad's extended family) because they will have to flee once they lose power as they will otherwise suffer from a severe case of ethnic cleansing.

If Assad could boast that Syria was able to quash terrorist cells and support within its borders, I wouldn't mind giving him the benefit of the doubt. Frankly, Saddam was a ruler like this. He was brutal and terrible, but the evil he was keeping down was even worse.

But Syria is a hotbed of terrorist cells. So he's brutal and ineffective. It's the worst possible combination.

He asked what right governments whose countries belong to the pan-Arab organisation, including the absolute monarchies of the Gulf, had to lecture Syria about democracy or reform.

"The first parliament in Syria was in 1917. Where were they then?" he asked. "Their situation is like a doctor who smokes and recommends to his patient to give up smoking while he, the doctor, has a cigarette in his mouth."

He should hire someone to write his similies.

I thought the worst possible combination was 1-2-3-4-5-6

I forget, is Assad a bad dictator or a good one like Saddam? Hard to keep track, what with the double standard the left has for Bush's vs. Obama's military actions against bad guys.

No way they'll accept those heretic splitters. No way. Don't look at me, I voted for Pappy O'Daniel. I don't care much for that reform nonsense.
