And where is Frank Zappa when you need him?

Dweezil, Ahmet, and Moon Unit could combine into a Zappa Voltron and still not do the job of Frank!

The thing with profanity and nudity on network television is that you have to have faith in the ones responsible for creating the content to not go overboard. They've written television for years without profanity and nudity, and they could continue to do so, but the occasional profanity or nudity that would be used for something more than shock factor; I don't see an issue with. Your precious little snowflakes know more and have seen more than parents realize. Have a little faith in the creative teams responsible for network television and cut them some damn slack. They could even revise the ratings system to include different levels of profanity involved in the episode. If it's live then it's live. Anything should go. If someone goes overboard or goes on a tirade they simply get their mic cut off. The FCC needs to go.

This is absolutely pointless. It makes me sad for Steven Tyler even which is fairly hard to do. Also:

Since it's all digital now anyway, isn't this out of the FCCs overbearing oversight. Cable networks can show whatever they like, but they are only guided by advertiser prudence. Or did the FCC somehow become the regulator of all forms of information transfer?

No, the digital information still goes over public airwaves.

Now, I'm all for getting rid of the FCC, having a ratings system (oh, wait we already do.), and letting anything go.

He was apparently good personal friends with Vaclav Havel. I had no idea until I heard then when Havel passed away recently...

2012-01-11 12:10:16 AM
The Obama administration has objected that the appeals court stripped the FCC of its ability to police the airwaves, and the commission is appealing the ruling.

So, um, good? The purpose of the FCC is to keep people from screwing up each others broadcast signals by assigning them each a distinct frequency ban, the use of their power for content regulation is the most flagrant abuse of unintended authority since they decided they could use the commerce clause to control things that are explicitly not interstate or commerce.

2012-01-11 12:42:14 AM

ParagonComplex: The thing with profanity and nudity on network television is that you have to have faith in the ones responsible for creating the content to not go overboard.

A decade or so ago you could have said the same thing about reality television. That worked out so well.

2012-01-11 02:26:25 AM
Right now, it seems networks need the FCC regulations to go away. Nearly every year at awards season, the networks have gotten their clock cleaned by HBO, Showtime, AMC, and FX. The best writers and filmmakers are now going to one of these places, even if it means fewer episodes and lower budgets, because they have more freedom to make their shows the way they feel they need to be made. That in turn attracts better talent.

Case in point: Pan Am. Had potential to be a decent show, but instead, ABC turned it into a watered-down Mad Men/Gray's Anatomy hybrid.

With a few episodes of House notwithstanding, the big three networks haven't cranked out a really great show since West Wing went off the air.

Tyler is trying to be reasonable about public profanity,

no one wants to hear you talk on your phone or rap or yell or curse

not cute or clever

private or purchased idiocy is widely available to all,

We can have cut open cadavers on CSI every week , have blood in every prime time drama, but if you show a nipple, the country will riot. Why are insides better than outsides?

Watch basic cable shows, they all use "shiat" now. Sunny in Philly, South Park etc. I barely even notice it, because they don't put a big ol' BLEEEEEPPPPPPP every time they say it. It flows in the conversation. Even Goodfellas. You watch that movie, you get into the story, you don't even hear the farks and shiats after a while. Now watch it on ABC. They silence every curse to the point it's unwatchable and you notice each and every time they say it.

Just back the fark off and let the people decide. There's a reason every box/tv/video game unit has a parental password built in. Don't like it, use it.

'You are the only censor. If you don't like what I say, you have a choice, you can turn me off"

Only two hours of wrestling a week. The Ghost reality crap is far more pervasive and damaging.

Profanity doesn't bother me. I'm a fairly prolific user of it myself. That being said:

Saying "f*ck" 657 times an hour doesn't make a show better, or edgy. Just repetitive and annoying. It's like those stand-up comics who can't tell a coherent joke so they just stand up there and say all of the permutations of the seven dirtys for a half hour. Profanity is not an effective turd polish.

Of course I won't notice if they do start cussing like a Tourette's patient on crack. They could blow a goat on TV & I'd never know unless someone posted about it on Fark. I pretty much gave up on broadcast TV when they began saturating the air with reality shows, infomercials & dull "talent" contests. I am a big movie fan, though.

I'd rather the FCC worry about lies in "news" media than the occasional slip of the tongue.
