That's what I was thinking. Stalin didn't just have his competition eliminated, he had them erased.

And he did it before the invention of modern technology, like airbrushing or ink. Stalin did it by sheer force of will. As in "You will disappear my enemies from these photos, or you also will disappear, comrade."
