FBI Special Agent Rebecka Brown wrote in an affidavit, "When asked about his motive in targeting for robbery Wells Fargo Bank, Herdt replied that he hated the bank because he previously had an account and was charged numerous overdraft fees."

How the hell do these bank fees ever surprise anyone? Do people just sign up for accounts and not read anything? It's not rocket science how to avoid the fees. They don't jump out at you while walking down the street.
Man, I got hit with another "meal fee" at the sushi bar. Why does this keep happening to me?

You know, I've always hated PMITA as a description of prison. The "M" stands for "me". If some random guy goes to prison and I'm the one taking an ass pounding, then there is something really wrong.
I've always preferred PHITA, where the "H" can stand for either him or her.

Yes, sure, banks are evil and all that, but what the fark do you expect an evil organization to do when you basically take out an on-demand loan from them?
In any case, I see a lot of banks now allowing customers to opt out of overdrafts altogether, so instead of getting your instant loan and a $40 fee (or whatever), you just get your charges declined. I opted out with my bank. In college I racked up $100+ in overdraft fees in several instances. It was stupid. It was my fault.
So fark banks, but this douche kid sounds like someone who could use a little time to meditate over his entitlement issues.

you know who loses? the insurance companies. maybe that bank branch suffers a slightly higher premium. but the first 5k in every register is insured on the cheapest insurance plan a bank could have (that's why they don't keep more than 5k in a register). not to mention FDIC. so, maybe we all suffer.

You're not doing it right. The individual has no responsibility. The bank is clearly at fault. They took advantage of some poor brainless individual by charging him (gasp) for overdrawing his account. Overdraft fees are so new that he probably just didn't know about them. This, too, is clearly the bank's fault for not sufficiently educating this poor man that they are a BUSINESS, not a charity.

You can do everything in the world to avoid the fees, right up until the banks change the terms on you. Just had this happen to me. Woke up with a $13 monthly service fee from WF. Did absolutely nothing to deserve the charge. This would be the 5th time in the last 9 months that this has happened. All because WF decides that my mortgage doesn't need to be linked to my checking acct anymore, which keeps me from being assessed the fee. So every time I have to call them up and get the damn thing reversed. Each time they assure me that it won't happen again, until the next quarter, when surprise surprise, it happens again.

It's a bit more than personal responsibility - the banks have been actively trying to increase fees. For example, in the old days if you tried to spend more than you had in your account, the charge was refused. No fee was accessed as you never were overdrawn. Then the banks decided that it's more profitable to allow the charge (as a courtesy) then hit you with a fee for the "service".
Of course, that wasn't enough, so they changed the processing rules. For example; a skateboarder has $50 in his account, and makes 9 $5 charges, followed by a $55 charge. Rather than process them in the order he made them, which would cause a single OD charge, the bank processes then in the order of biggest to smallest. This order causes 10 OD charges - which at $30 per is $270 more than if they had processed them in order he made them.
For a person living paycheck to paycheck, these policies can quickly mean that their next check goes straight to the bank - leaving them nothing. Yes the skateboarder is wrong - and the police "regulated" him. My problem is, the people "regulating" the banks...aren't.
/full disclosure, I'm a platinum acccount holder, so no fees for me (and I declined overdraft "protection" - as should everyone).

I am not saying he should get more time, however I am surprised he didn't get more. I was threatened with 10 years for a coinstar robbery based on that I was working when the guy did it and thought I knew him. We were the first of nine stores hit. Lousy store detectives broke into my car at work for 3 days till I called the cops, never happened again. Manager said it couldn't have been them, but highly doubtful.

I didn't know what overdraft was so I had to look it up.
I'm the kind of guy who is mortally afraid of paying interest as if it were the sword of Damocles hanging over my head, so the idea of an overdraft fee blows my farking mind. Maybe my life is all pillows and blankets, but I don't see how a typical person can broach overdraft.
First of all, credit unions are usually less rapey when it comes to your account than any bank will be. Second, I haven't had any complaints regarding the services of Wells Fargo for the services I hold with them; that said I also intend to close my Wells Fargo account as soon as it is no longer relevant to me.

Adding to that is the policy, at least back when I had these issues, of running each charge through twice. While totally accepting my own responsibility for the problem, I wrote a check for just over five dollars . The bank bounced it and charged me a fee, then the merchant charged me a returned check fee, then they tried it again causing it to bounce again, charging me another fee from the bank and another fee from the merchant. The result was me owing almost $120 for bouncing a check for less than six dollars.
/I finally discovered why I kept being over drawn.
//One divorce later and I haven't been over-drafted since.
