Hmm, I wonder why people would compare the modern expansionist actions of Israel so they have more space for settlements to the Nazis?

I think the Israelis ave some kind of national version of the Stockholm Syndrome going on. It's as if after the holocaust they are subconsciously emulating the Nazis, like how abused children grow up to abuse their own kids. They should put Lexapro in the water supply so everyone over there will just chill the fark out.

IgG4: It's as if after the holocaust they are subconsciously emulating the Nazis,

Nothing subconscious about it. In the late 19th century ethnic nationalism became very popular. The Nazis, Italian Fascists, Atatürk's Pan-turkism, Franco's Falangists, and yes Zionism all share their roots in that era.

No profit in it (for the military industrial complex).

For the record:

the people who dressed like this are Neturei Karta, the same people who throw rocks at buses that don't segregate men and women, the same group harassed little girls going to school including one of them spitting at her, this is the same group that went to Iran to kiss Ahmadinejad, this is the same group whose members beat up and terrify residents of their own enclaves, this is the same group who have engaged in vandalism in Israel against shops that did not live up to their standards, and are usually responsible for 99% of all the negative news about ultra-Orthodox people who are behaving like hooligans coming out of Israel.

So yeah, next time you want to post pictures of these guys as an example that 'not all Jews are zionists', think who you are busy giving attention to.

Menachem Begin In office 77-83
The Holocaust was often injected into his relations with foreign heads of government. His first communication with Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher included this passage:

"During the war we begged your air force to bomb the Nazi extermination camps to stop the mass murder of the Jews, but you wouldn't do it."

To the chagrin of many Israeli intellectuals who feared that Begin would cheapen the memory of the Holocaust by his constant references to it, he described Israel's Arab adversaries as neo-Nazis determined to wipe out the Jewish state and its people.

Come to think of it, how are you going to get this bill passed?

Oh they just love every Jew hater out there. They go to Holocaust denial conferences, they were pal with Arafat, they support Hamas, they visited Hizbullah in Liban, they go and see far-right anti-semitic European politicans,

They even love Ron Paul!

These protesters were also carrying signs saying 'World, save us from zionist oppression, send international forces' and other rubbish

So it's good to criminalize speech when the speaker has a history of spitting on people?

Where did I say I supported that law? I'm convinced you're just trolling me at this point

I don't support this law, I think it's idiotic, even if their display (that I actually saw) was revolting.

Leftists in Tel Aviv routinely use that imagery, but suddenly some people use it in Meah Shearim and it's time to outlaw it and curb free speech.

What can you learn from one of the worst and most often repeated canards around?

Germany was in no way, shape or form a "modern western democratic government." Germany had 14 years of a form of democracy between Wilhelm's abdication and Hitler's takeover. And those 14 years featured severe economic disruptions and continual pressure from neighboring states. Fourteen years of "democracy" is nowhere near long enough to overcome centuries of autocratic rule. (see: Russia)

If you're going to point to history for justification of your arguments, try to get the history correct.

Tatsuma: Neturei Karta, a group whose name roughly translates as 'How a bout you read TFA?'

You know, I read the article, and short as it is, I see no mention of Neturei Karta.

However, Haaretz noted that it was approved and supported by the Israeli cabinet, and was sponsored by MK Uri Ariel of the National Union party, who, according to Wikipedia, have a platform of "it supports the settlement of all the Land of Israel, advocates the use of more military power in the war on terror and harsher measures against Palestinian terrorism."

For some reason, the National Union's platform doesn't sound anything like that of Neturei Karta, who, according to Wikipedia, "opposes Zionism and calls for a peaceful dismantling of the State of Israel, in the belief that Jews are forbidden to have their own state until the coming of the Messiah."

Of course, Tatsuma has me on ignore, so he wouldn't see me make the point, anyway.

Wendy's Chili: Um... What the f*ck are you talking about?

The big protests last week with kids dressed up as concentration camp victims and mimicking famous photo poses, to say that the modern general Israeli society and the media are demonizing the ultra-orthodox, which, according to them, is how the Holocaust started and so the comparison is legit.

This horrified all kinds of people in Israel and elsewhere.

But there's been use of Nazi imagery earlier, political settlers were wearing stars (orange so not exactly the same, but referencing it) and using Nazi language during settlement dismantling earlier too - which also bought disgust from other parts of the public, though it didn't make so much international news.

Not being Israeli I've no say in it but my first reaction is banning speech isn't going to help. If anything let more speech out and talk about the issue.

Yeah, I get the gist of the situation over there, I just thought it was kinda bizzare that Tatsuma felt compelled to come in and condemn all the non-existent anti-Zionist picture-posting that was going on in this thread rather than comment on the law that is the subject of the article.

The Chareidi world was horrified by this.

yeah and the rest of society was horrified and they immediately stopped and said 'Welp, sorry about that, that's not really the message we wanted to send'

That was a stupid move on their part

And a LOT of protesters during the tent protests were wearing those stars.

So what I said had only been true for 14 years so I don't have the history correct? That's some mighty fine logic there Lou.

Actually, the German Empire was a constitutional monarchy anyway. Not as democratic as we are today, but then neither were we.

The whole "lets change history because it sounds like you are saying something nice about Hitler if you admit that he came to power through constitutional means" is stupid.

That's where the debate gets a heck of a lot more nuanced.

vpb: The whole "lets change history because it sounds like you are saying something nice about Hitler if you admit that he came to power through constitutional means" is stupid.

Yeah there's people who get upset about various exhibits showing Hitler's (or other dictators') personal effects, or daily stuff like calendars with pro-Nazi messages or advertisements for commemorative department store sales when some atrocities went on in China and whatever else, saying it glorifies things. I can kinda see that argument, but on the other hand I think it's important for people to realize that you can't always tell who is going to go off the rails that badly when it all first starts, that it's so often frog in the pot slow, and YES, ordinary perfectly "nice" people end up getting involved, so in the modern day too people need to think about stuff. Regular people can do some really horrific things.

People like to think afterward that well, gee, I wouldn't have been taken in. Or well, surely MY ancestors were in the opposition or didn't own slaves or whatever it is. Or if they did, surely they were horribly coerced. I'm safe.

...but maybe that's another thread.

How ironic.

I suppose when you are acting like Nazis to the Palistinians, it helps to disassociate yourself a bit.
