I'm conflicted.
On one hand, I dislike bigotry. On the other hand, if bigotry splits the Republican vote (or causes many of them to not vote at all) and keeps the right wing out of the White House for four more years I'm not going to complain.

Yeah, it's regrettable that bigotry could significantly affect anyone's chances at office. But just like encouraging democracy abroad, we can't say it doesn't count when "our people" don't win.

So, boo on Keller.

At this rate, I'd have to agree with you.

Huntsman would've been AWESOME, but he's got a snowball's chance in hell right now. If Romney get it, at least he's not full-on crazy like the likes of Santorum or Perry. F*ck those guys.

/how crazy is Santorum? FF wants to auto-correct his name to "Sanatorium," so there you go

Well the GOP is full of obstructionists, and Satan is the obstructor. So, he should be proud.

ChristianWire? Yeah. It'll take a few posts for the majority OTT to realize that though.

Still, Poe's law and all that.

Hey Hubie - remember when handing over the keys to your party to the religious nutjobs seemed like a good idea? Good times, good times. Now tell us again how you just don't understand how your party left you behind... that never gets old.

Weaver95: this is what happens when you let cultists into your political party....

Isn't it arguable that the modern GOP is the cult, and that they are using other Western religions (no Muslims, Buddhists, or Hindus need apply) as the co-opt for the greater god, political power? Kind of taking the energy and fervor and re-channeling it into a new belief structure loosely aligned with the former religions' ideas?

While generally I agree with this, I also think that being a Mormon should be a disqualifier for the position of POTUS. If you believe that Joseph Smith BS then you're too much of an idiot to have even marginal control over the reins of power.

/of course this is also true of all other religions, but especially Mormons.

And it begins.

The great thing about politics in general is that there is little medium-to-long-term memory. Remember when Mitt's dad, George, gave it a good run back in '68? No? Well, he pretty much short-circuited his own chances fairly early on by being an idiot, but had he continued to be a front-runner, he would have been smothered in an anti-Mormon avalanche, maybe even worse than Mitt will, considering the LDS church's track record back then (not like it's all that much better now, but you get my drift).

Mitt's going to continue to get eviscerated by fundie Righties, especially when they start getting organized, and it's going to be a mess. A glorious glorious mess. Frothy even. I'll have a lot of fun watching this year play out.

I kinda think they waited too long to fully obtain their objective; if they do end up subverting Mitt's run, there will be no one to replace him. Gee, what a shame.

Doesn't it just seem more whacko due to it being within living memory in its creation? Is there really anything more sane than believing in a zombie that was taken intact up to heaven to be with his father god, of whom he actually is at the same time? I think familiarity with the "old religions" leads to some funny judgements and acceptance. I don't find Mormonism any more absurd than any other branch of magical thinking, personally.

Satan: his wife did it!

To be honest, Satan probably would be a good republican candidate, given that he has run a tight ship now for how many years now and has never taken or needed government funding, and doesn't need to buy into any kind of socialized medicine schemes or pay into the ponzi scheme that is social security, and gets most of the employees to work for cheap.

However, he probably doesn't allow concealed carry at work, so he'd be treated as a left-wing whacko by most of the GOP.

I like Old Testament Satan where Satan and God were always making these wild bets and playing the humans off of one another because they were bored.

As someone who voted for Obama and Nader before that during the bush years, I'd vote for Huntsman if they put him up against Obama. Otherwise if the Republicans go with anyone else I'll be voting for Obama again.

/ Would also consider time-travelling John McCain from the 2000 race - 2008 McCain need not apply...

Again, bigotry is bigotry. Don't let the relative wackiness of different faiths obscure that fact.

Apparently the author, who I hear is the leading evangelical preacher or something, doesn't know the difference between a non-Christian and a heretic.

On the other hand, I find it really hard to think of the sola scriptura sects thinking that Mormonism doesn't count as Christianity as "bigotry". They don't even think that Catholicism is real Christianity because it has reverence ceremonies and catechism, disqualifying the guys that added an entire testament seems pretty legit.

I can't really say that I have a problem with people not voting for someone because of an incompatible belief system. Honestly, that should almost be the only determining factor in where your vote goes, expanded beyond religious context.

Well, I can almost understand where people 2000 years ago could believe in zombie Jesus. They were ignorant rubes who didn't understand science. But people these days should be smarter than that. It's depressing that we aren't.
