I saw this a few times on the Blue Line in Chicago. farkers wouldn't stand up when an elderly passenger came in (I was standing also, so I couldn't give up my seat).

On Saturday, blind guy steps on the train. I saw 4 heads instantly go towards their books/iPads/phones. Pathetic, really.

Are people just not taught manners anymore? I find something like this to be unconscionable. Nobody thinks to himself, "If I don't give my seat to this pregnant woman, I'm going to feel like a douchebag all day?"

That crap doesn't cut it on LTD (Lane Transit District) buses. There are seats near the front of the bus for disabled and senior passengers. If the bus is full and such a passenger boards, and no one in those seats voluntarily moves, the bus driver will tell them to do so.

Surprisingly enough, 9 times out of 10 when I'm offered a seat, it's by a teenage boy or young man. I always thank them too since my balance is poor and standing on a moving bus is difficult for me.

My wife worked up to a week before her due date, and her colleagues were always saying, "Why are you still at work?" The "Work 'til you water breaks" American attitude is absent in France.

As is the "Come back to work 2 days after a C-section" attitude.

My mother is the kindest little 5' 2" Irish-Catholic women you've ever met. She would beat me senseless if I didn't offer my seat up with a smile.

I don't look at people when I am using public transit. I find my seat, and I open my book or my Nintendo DS, and that's that. I'm not rude, I just don't give a fark about your existence in my life, so give me a break and fark off.

When we were in Germany, I almost never had to get the stroller onto/off of the bus myself. Someone would almost always help. They have a section of the bus designated for strollers.
As a consequence of living there and taking their public transportation, my kids have wonderful bus/train manners.
Too bad the town we now live in has no public transportation to speak of.

I don't see how they would even be able to sit in them if their mom lives in, say, Virginia, and had to store the stroller all the way in Washington state.

If I was there I definitely would have stood up for her. And if I didn't have a seat I would have yelled at one of the punks, "Hey punk, get out of your seat and let this fat lady sit down."

I'd gladly offer up my seat. I have in the past and will in the future. I was just in Rome and was on the train and gave up my seat for an elderly man even though my flat feet were killing me because I forgot to pack my orthotics and walked for 6 hours that day. I'd rather be in pain than someone else.

That said...

Is there a reason that this woman in the article would rather passive-aggressively biatch than politely ask if someone would be willing to give up their seat? Why is all the onus on the non-needy? Yes, it's manners. But it can work both ways.

I wouldn't offer my seat to a pregnant lady either. In this day and age of feminism and equality, they can stand. I was actually incredulous when, at Christmas, as my family was boarding a bus to NYC, my brother was saying loudly "I wonder who is going to give up their seat to M---" (who is 5 months pregnant). I wanted to retort "She is in better shape than I am, and that 10" baby isn't going to kill her."
