Well she did. Stop feeling so entitled, pregnant lady!

I saw this a few times on the Blue Line in Chicago. farkers wouldn't stand up when an elderly passenger came in (I was standing also, so I couldn't give up my seat).
On Saturday, blind guy steps on the train. I saw 4 heads instantly go towards their books/iPads/phones. Pathetic, really.

Are people just not taught manners anymore? I find something like this to be unconscionable. Nobody thinks to himself, "If I don't give my seat to this pregnant woman, I'm going to feel like a douchebag all day?"

That crap doesn't cut it on LTD (Lane Transit District) buses. There are seats near the front of the bus for disabled and senior passengers. If the bus is full and such a passenger boards, and no one in those seats voluntarily moves, the bus driver will tell them to do so.
Surprisingly enough, 9 times out of 10 when I'm offered a seat, it's by a teenage boy or young man. I always thank them too since my balance is poor and standing on a moving bus is difficult for me.

Nope. Or at least they don't care about them any more. It's amazing the kinds of rude things people don't give a second thought to anymore.

The woman should have stood on her swollen feet. This is her penance for saying "gobsmacked."

Being on a bus is different than a train. I've seen bus drivers do that, but on a train, the conductor isn't in every compartment.
Luckily the blind dude had a CTA worker with him and got him a seat. But...it was just amazing how everyone just ignored it. It was like in school, when the teacher asks a question and no one knows the answer, everyone just looks down, hoping not to be called.
Personally, I blame Apple and Steve Jobs.

Not so surprising. They haven't had the unmistakable experience of being biatched at by some gender warrior who thinks lambasting a guy for offering common courtesy is striking a fatal blow against The Man.

When my wife was pregnant, she said it was usually a woman who would give up her seat on the metro.
French women are usually off work on doctors orders by the time they're too pregnant to stand for a work commute. My wife worked up to a week before her due date, and her colleagues were always saying, "Why are you still at work?" The "Work 'til you water breaks" American attitude is absent in France.
As is the "Come back to work 2 days after a C-section" attitude.
Dieu merci.

My mother is the kindest little 5' 2" Irish-Catholic women you've ever met. She would beat me senseless if I didn't offer my seat up with a smile.

There is no excuse for a lack of manners except poor parents. my daughter and I took mass transit when she was younger and I always made her sit on my lap or give up her seat if no one else would.
I have no qualms about calling some of these lazy, ill mannered punks out for ignoring someone who needs the seat more than them.
Best are the overweight, entitled women that fill the seat next to them with groceries and look out the window as someone struggles to stand.

In general. I find the teenage kids a lot more polite than people in their 20's or 30's. If there's a teener entering a store ahead of me, it's almost a given the door will be held open. If it's someone older, I try to avoid a concussion and picking glass out of my teeth.

My fav are the women with strollers who board first, sit in the first seat by the driver, and the rest of the boarding passengers have to do gymnastics just to get by the damn stroller now blocking the aisle. Thanks, lady - you can have that seat if you want it, it's designated for you and the elderly, just wait a damn minute for the rest of us to board first.

I don't look at people when I am using public transit. I find my seat, and I open my book or my Nintendo DS, and that's that. I'm not rude, I just don't give a fark about your existence in my life, so give me a break and fark off.

Strollers have to be folded and out of the way in Oregon and Washington.

When we were in Germany, I almost never had to get the stroller onto/off of the bus myself. Someone would almost always help. They have a section of the bus designated for strollers.
As a consequence of living there and taking their public transportation, my kids have wonderful bus/train manners.
Too bad the town we now live in has no public transportation to speak of.

But the people on the bus are right. She bought her ticket, she chose to be pregnant, I say, let her stand.

I don't see how they would even be able to sit in them if their mom lives in, say, Virginia, and had to store the stroller all the way in Washington state.

I'd gladly offer up my seat. I have in the past and will in the future. I was just in Rome and was on the train and gave up my seat for an elderly man even though my flat feet were killing me because I forgot to pack my orthotics and walked for 6 hours that day. I'd rather be in pain than someone else.
That said...
Is there a reason that this woman in the article would rather passive-aggressively biatch than politely ask if someone would be willing to give up their seat? Why is all the onus on the non-needy? Yes, it's manners. But it can work both ways.

I wouldn't offer my seat to a pregnant lady either. In this day and age of feminism and equality, they can stand. I was actually incredulous when, at Christmas, as my family was boarding a bus to NYC, my brother was saying loudly "I wonder who is going to give up their seat to M---" (who is 5 months pregnant). I wanted to retort "She is in better shape than I am, and that 10" baby isn't going to kill her."
