The deputy who pulled Warren over recognized him for having been arrested for cocaine distribution so after warning him about his traffic infraction he asked permission to search Warren's vehicle.

Warren complied
and during the search a scale was found in the glove compartment with the remnants of cocaine. Two "street rolls" of cash were also found in his pocket, totaling $1,595.

$1595 is "such a large amount of cash"? I expected it to be 10x that amount to be worth a mention.

"street roll"?

The correct answer is, "Because it's not against the law."

I like how the article skips from the quote to the details of his court date as if inferring whatever happened next is known or can be construed by the readers.

Never understood this one at all.

You wanna confiscate contraband, drugs, cars of people who are obviously trafficking with intent... Thats ok, as long as you do it legal like.

You ask me why I have X amount of money on me, I'm going to tell you to take it up with the IRS if you have any questions on how much money I have.

/No, you may not search my vehicle without probably cause.

Even if "Because I am in the middle of a divorce and I don't want money sitting in the bank because my ex is psycho" is a legitimate reason, I should not have to explain to you why I have cash... where it came from, or where I am going.

Just some quick math;
$1595 is less than 2 days operating cost on that cop's squad car.

Darn, I feel safer already.

They say World of Warcraft is a foolish child's game.
One of the first tactics you must master is how to utilize your group's limited abilities to overcome large targets.
A basic ploy is to lure the target offsides by distraction with a small expendible.

Just how much cash does the average farker carry on his person on a regular day???

Apparently in addition to the "internet tough guy" there's the "internet gangsta thousandaire".

That said, either the guy was monumentally stupid to consent to the search or the
permission was made up. It was either that or invent some probable cause.

And the correct answer to the question is - "I want my lawer.".

Maybe it's the hyper-cynic in me operating on too little coffee, but "why do you have so much cash on you" sounds like soliciting a bribe to me.

As if the "correct" answer was "No clue, really. Why, would you like some?"

Absolutely no other reason to have more money on you than 20 dollars. Nope.

People who jump from "you are doing something legal right now." to "which means that you're GOING to do something illegal later, obviously." just need to have that thinking bite them in the ass once.

There was a time before ATM/Debit cards were so prevalent, and there were people that didn't like paying with checks or using credit cards, that when they went shopping they carried the amount of money that they planned to spend with them. And some people still today who don't have bank accounts still carry large amounts of cash to pay for things or they get paid for doing legitimate work in cash. Not everybody has the same situation as you.

Even if the guy didn't consent to the search they would have held him there and got a warrant to search the car anyway. Plus he probably consented to the search because he didn't have anything on him. After all the only thing they found was "cocaine residue" in his glove box, and they arrested him for that and having $1595 in cash. What kind of ridiculousness is that?

Jack Black 62: Phoenix_M: If a cop asks you "why you have such a large amount of cash", The correct answer is NONE OF YOUR farkING BUSINESS.

Yeah, you might get shiat for it but thats the correct answer.

Plus, you NEVER give consent to search. You should only ask two questions:

Am I under arrest?
Am I free to go now?

am I being detained, not under arrest.

The answer to "am I under arrest" can be... "we are determining that now..."

And you do that shiat AFTER the traffic stop. During the traffic stop you remain polite, courteous, and answer simply. Yes, No, I don't Know.

/Damned right about search consent though

Which means he's guilty.

Which means everything he owns is now considered "ill-gotten gains" and is confiscated by the State without due process - car, home, boat, wife, children's kidneys and livers - all will be sold at police auction.

There's a big difference between carrying $1000+ from a legitamite transaction. Then $1000+ from an illegal transaction. The difference is in your brain. And cops can read it. If you're interested in more. Why don't you try telling a lie to someone. And they detect it right away. It's not whether you are a good liar or not. It's whether if the other person is interested in having sex with u.

I'm one of them.

I got pulled over on a FRIDAY NIGHT about 15 yrs ago for going a few miles over the speed limit. cop patted me down wanted to know what I was doing with such a large amount of cash. (those were his exact words, so it must be one of their buzzwords for reporting)

The large amount? just under $300...on payday.

I just rolled my eyes at him and reminded him most people get paid on friday.

Not everybody excepts checks or debit cards. If I go to somebody's house to buy a TV, they probably aren't going to take a check. And their job isn't to hassle people for doing legal things, like carrying around money with them.
