Yeah.... OK. This has already been done. It's called a camper trailer.

I like the pic, it should be the one used for the definition of hipster..
The "house" looks like it weighs a lot, should be fun to tow with their bikes.

The only way that thing is going to hit 60 is downhill in a hurricane. Especially being towed by a Prius.

Agreed. People who bust their asses on building their dream house---not just designing it but touching every nail that goes into it--are entitled to feel a sense of real accomplishment and if that includes some smug that's fine.. They didn't just buy a Prius----they did the gruntwork, research and elbow grease with reclaimed materials and such. That's the kind of thing that deserves praise, not scorn. Its major life accomplishment.

So, a couple hipsters built a tree-house except on the ground. Plenty of kids in their early teens do that with far less disposable income.

How is building a shed/tree-house a major life accomplishment?

This is funny because hipster males and hipster females are basically interchangeable. But the males gripe more when you fark 'em.

2012-01-10 02:30:53 AM
Most people who I see who can be considered hipsters are really hard workers. That's just something I noticed. Not that they ever do anything of consequence, but then again people who do things of consequence are assholes, so...whatever.

ThatGuyFromTheInternet: And yet people still deny the existence of hipsters.

People deny it? I think the word is often used wrongly (but not in this case), but that's somewhat understandable as hipsterism has its own local variations that might lead to confusion as well as many of the fashions they adopt change from season to season.

For instance, while in New York I encountered large quantities of "Homeless guy" hipster, the ones that go out of their way to try and look like a guy who's been living on the streets for the last 20 years, complete with unkempt beard, despite being 22 and living on a trust fund. I've never encountered this type in Los Angeles' more hipster areas.

The worst hipster infestation I've come across is Portland Oregon. Only major city I've been to where hipsters appear to make up the majority of the population.

If there is anything that the US has plenty of, it's space. This is the ultimate in completely, utterly pointless, feel-good hippy crap.

DeathByGeekSquad: But did they pay off the permit guy at City Hall?

That is kind of the point of this type of tiny home in the "tiny house movement." They are built on trailers so that they can be transported, and are not thus permanent structures. Most such exist as exceptions to local land use, or zoning ordinances, and because they are not permanently attached to the ground don't usually have to adhere to building codes. Now, they can be licensed and even insured as travel trailers, but since they don't look like it, many "live" in stealth in the backyard of family or friends. Some are placed more permanently on owned or leased land. Some are truly what you might call "parasite" homes inasmuch as they'll depend on access to a host home's utitlies -- electric, water, and sewage. Some are more independent with solar, generators, water catchment, water storage, grey and black water tanks that can be removed easily, or pumped out at RV or Truckstop facilities. Some use composting toilets, or incinolets. Some have no toileting or bathing facilities, and are effectively outside bedrooms with minimal cooking arrangements. I am interested in these, not because I want one on a trailer, but because I like the conservation of space, economy of materials, and I want to build one or two small, completely livable and as off-grid houses in two parts of the country, and I need to be able to build both, pay for both, as I think I won't qualify for three mortgages. I'll agree that some of what these two have done, and now redone seems impractical, but fark it? It is their life, and they'll live it with far more free time, and fewer financial obligations than most of us.

I'm at a loss as how to proceed.

Seriously, a Hobbit house would be more spacious.

Speaking of which. Way more awesome. (new window)

Who the hell would go out of their way to live the rest of their lives in a space smaller than a hotel room? This would be cool if it were in the woods overlooking a mountain for the weekend, but as an actual home? Screw that.

2012-01-10 03:39:15 AM
Realistically, two people need about 800 sq. ft. minimum to live together without killing each other. Do we really want to live in a society where we are forced to live a less comfortable life than some basic hard fought standards? Isn't this the payoff for civilization, and all the hardship of 10,000 years?

I agree. The US is all about reckless consumerism of the unnecessarily big. This flies in the face that. It's straight up unamerican.

They will get tired of living in something that small after a few months of actually living there.

Alternatively, for the $7,000 that they spent they could have done the environment one better by renovating an existing home (new window), had much more space and saved months of work.

That took 15 seconds to find. I'll bet that one of those library days spent would come up with more options in their local area and for that price.
