How did they get the latent religious people to participate in the poll?

Provincetown is the gayest city. West Hollywood is pretty gay too.

The thing about mormon culture is that it's perfectly OK for a guy to be really effeminate, and talk about their feelings a lot, and have hobbies like ballroom dancing or knitting without anyone suggesting that they are gay.

The other thing about mormon culture is that it is not at all OK to be gay. Like your entire family might disown you not ok.

So, in utah, gay guys just find a chick who doesn't like sex very much - pretty easy to find around here, and I'm not saying closeted lesbian either, just ladies who are SURE that enjoying sex is a sin - and get married and have a bunch of kids.

Some of them eventually come out, some of them don't.

So, if you were to find out which cities have a high proportion of gay people with natural born children, Salt Lake City would be near the top of the list, if not at the top.

Basically, if there's a genetic component to homosexual identity, mormons have it in spades.

SLC represent!

SLC farker here. Not a native Utahn. Spent most of my life in CT, upstate NY, rural VA and Nashville. This state is ridiculously conservative, but SLC proper is an oasis. Quite honestly, there's not a lot to do, but inside the boundaries of SLC proper, it's more progressive than Nashville. I can only compare it to my own experiences, but I am guessing the high ranking comes from the contrast to the rest of the state. For example, to say San Francisco is 2000% more tolerant than San Jose is hyperbole, to say SLC is 2000% more tolerant than Provo is not.

Austin is *way* more gay than Portland.

FTFA: Numbers from the 2010 Census shows Salt Lake City and Utah have had an uptick in the number of households headed by same-sex couples. In fact, Salt Lake City ranks No. 3 nationally among mid-size cities for its rate of gay and lesbian couples

Gay married folks have to move *somewhere* to raise their families. I'm guessing SLC is a fairly family friendly place.

Who knows. Guessing what goes green and what doesn't is just impossible to guess some days, particularly when that one had a far better link.

I'm not surprised Salt Lake City is the gayest city in the USA. They have a very active GLBT community with a serious Pride celebration downtown every year. However, the further you go from SLC, the tolerance drops exponentially.

I find it refreshing here in SLC after living in Huntsville, AL where you never let anyone know you're gay openly. You can lose your job, get beat up, run off the road in some parts. And Huntsville doesn't do Pride celebrations either. Sad to see so much hate in the Bible Belt.

/Still temporarily living in SLC for several more months.

You'd be surprised how many gays there are in the Mormon states, not because Mormons are gay, but because they tend to not care if other people are I guess.

There's nothing going on. That's what I saw when I looked out over the city: nothing. How the Mormon settlers looked upon this valley and felt that it was the promised land is beyond me. I don't know, maybe it looked different back then.

This must be part of the Ogilvy & Mather (you have to remember they were apologists for the Roman Catholics about 10 years ago) Mormon ad campaign. Because I've seen gay communities and the Mormons were sending big Mitt Romney $$$ against CA proposition 8.

Here in Seattle they just send 12-year olds around to collect signatures against gay marriage.

But it is okay for Romney's grandparents to abandon the U.S. for Mexico rather than obey U.S. marriage laws. At least until Mexican politics arranged for the traitors to return.

/Gentile here.

I never looked at it that way, but it makes sense since there's so much repression among Mormons. I used to live in Salt Lake, and I knew a few gay folks who had grown up Mormon and fled to Salt Lake as soon as they could. My theory was that if you're gay and you're from Utah/Wyoming/Idaho/Norhtern NV, Salt Lake is the nearest big city, and the only liberal outpost between Denver and San Francisco. So geographically, it was destined to turn into a gay magnet.

/a hot, throbbing gay magnet

The survey ignores obvious picks such as New York and San Francisco to rank "less expected" places

Well there's your explanation. It's a list of "The Gayest Cities in America"*

*excluding New York and San Francisco

Yeah, like the Mormon funding of prop 8 in California. That was real tolerant.

This is precisely it. I spent a bit of time in SLC, and as I put it to everyone who goes "utah!?!?", all the cool and interesting and alternative people from all of Utah move to SLC, making it at least pretty cool.

Is nude yoga a stereotypically gay thing? Do straights not like nude yoga? Is "nude yoga" not what it sounds like?

On a side note...what's with ALL the gay guys trying to hold on to their LDS roots. I mean, you won't drink coffee, buy you'll attend orgies? I'm finding this to be pretty common here in Utah.

If all the men didn't stake claim on 8 women a piece, it probably wouldn't be so gay.

Allen262: Subby, most of CA is high on "medical marijuana".

That and California is post gay. Like no one cares anymore.

I run into gay men who don't like being identified as gay because they don't want the stereotyping or the baggage. As in if I'm 'gay' then I'm expected to put on that accent and talk about clothes and food instead of Formula 1 racing. My women friends then wake me up at 3am to talk about the latest douche boyfriend of theirs. Fark that.

to anti-discrimination protections
for everyone or just gay people?
and openly LGBT elected officials

My girlfriend and I traveled from San Diego to Salt Lake to visit her mother. The sandwich shop next to our hotel had a rack that was entirely gay magazines and newspapers, so I'm not shocked to see this.
