The introduced animals are of a different species of tortoise, not the native Chelonoidis elephantopus.

They had trouble transporting the tortoise around the world (for zoos n such) because the animal was damn tasty.

No joke. Giant tortoise tastes like chicken, beef, mutton and butter put together. Every part of it -- even the organs, especially the liver -- is unbelievably delicious.

None of them made it to Europe because every time they tried to cart one (or more) over, they ended up eating it on the boat.

Also, they store drinkable water. Food and water in one handy container, perfect for storing on a ship.
