Hmm.. That settings screen layout looks strangely familiar.. Where have I seen such a layout before?? Do I own a playbook and not even know it?

FTFA:

Separately, NPD Group said Sunday that U.S. sales of consumer electronics fell 5.9 percent this past holiday season, as smartphones cannibalize sales of standalone gadgets like cameras, camcorders and GPS navigation devices....Camcorder sales plunged 43 percent, and sales of digital picture frames fell 38 percent. GPS units slumped 33 percent.

I can see that people are passing on camcorders because digital "still" cameras take good video too nowadays. I can also see GPS sales drop because of smart phones. The decline in digital picture frames is meaningless, it just means people finally wised up a bit. But I never quite comprehend how camera sales declines can be tied to phone sales. Is there anyone who has ever used a halfway decent digital camera and felt that the capabilities and features of a phone camera were equal? I mean, I'm not above using my phone to take a convenience snapshot, but I cannot imagine a phone that would match the features and versatility of my mid- to upper-tier digital cameras. Just about everybody I know has both a phone and a camera and when they actually want to take pictures, they use the camera. The phone camera is just a convenience for unimportant quick pix.

Did this announcement come from Dr. Evil?

That's 142.857143 gadgets per person in the world.

Oh, wait. Subby left the dollar sign out. Had me worried there for a moment. It's $142 worth of gadgets for every person in the world--roughly the cost of low-end e-reader or cellphone.

The only way I could buy 143 gadgets in a year is if you included $2 household gadgets from the dollar stores.

I like kitchen gadgets and they are dirt cheap and surprisingly good quality steel and plastic from China nowadays. Things that used to be 10-12 cents each when I was a kid are now only a dollar, which is a sizable price reduction once inflation and taxes are adjusted.

Let me know when you can get a decent electronic gadget (besides digital watch innards) for $2.
