If you think the entire nation has nothing by goodwill for Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, you should read this interview. "Every time I see them on TV it makes me want to vomit"

In April, Morris went to a funeral for one of his late wife's aunts. He found himself surrounded by couples and broke out in tears.
His wife had always told him that if she were to pass first, she would want him to find someone else. "I'm not going to mourn the rest of my life," he said.
He met one woman through an online dating site, but she was liberal. "I knew that was not going to work," he said.
This guy is a piece of work.

He blames Giffords' husband for not providing security for his wife--as if that was his job--but takes no blame for not protecting his own wife that day.
I think that maybe a great deal of this IS survivor's guilt, but he will never admit it as the guy's hatred of all things not ultraconservative has made him seethe with fury.

It is partly why he has refused to speak with reporters, worried they would twist his words to fit a political agenda.
Because he is clearly non-partisan.

Since I am an atheist I usually don't say this but if the choice is continuing to live with this guy or be turned into worm food I gotta believe his wife is in a better place now.

I don't get all the venom in here for this guy. Yea, he's a tea party nutter, and I don't get how his wife's death is Kelly's fault. But when Obama sent him a condolence letter he framed it and sent a respectful reply.
If anything I give the old coot credit for sticking to his guns. His crazy, crazy guns.

Yeah, I don't think he's an asshole. Just sad and wrong. But I loved his reply to the President. I thought it was actually very nice and I understand why he wouldn't want a visit from someone he disagreed with so much at such a time. I wouldn't want a visit from George W. Bush if I had lost a spouse to violence at one of his events. I'm not sure I would have had the class to respond as graciously. I would like to think so, but grief is a real biatch.
And what's wrong with dismissing someone over politics on an online dating site? Makes sense to me.

I just think it's funny that he went through this whole tragic ordeal, but came out the other side of it just as shallow and hateful as he was before.
"Yeah, it was really tough at first, but I know she'd want me to go out and live, and that's where I find my strength to carry on."

I don't want to go out on a limb defending this guy, but he probably didn't know about the death threats and lack of security until after the fact.
I guess I can see him blaming everyone involved when he found out. At least I am not going to judge him for it, knowing how much grief and loss can twist reason.

I must have missed that part of the interview? I couldn't date someone who had his political views, and I wouldn't expect him to want to spend much time with me. I've walked away from men who could wind me up in every other way because they riled me up when it came to values.
Whatever, like I sad, I think he's sad and wrong but I don't think he's an asshole. I hope he finds a loving partner and I am really sorry for his loss.

Honestly, he sounds like a sad old man who lost the love of his life and really doesn't know how to deal with it. I don't see him sitting in therapy, for example, to work through his issues.
He also does have a point -- why was a Congresswoman meeting people without any sort of security detail? Unfortunately, while I am sure she just wanted to be a normal person, one of the people, anyone with that degree of power/fame should have security when doing things like that.
I think he's just elderly, and more than anything, sad. Haven't any of you had sadness misread as anger?

Really, most conservatives I know are just as public as this guy. They are always the one to bring up politics at the family dinner, always the one to interject their conservative slant on things into just about any conversation, no matter how a-political the topic. It's as if they need to constantly re-enforce their world view for fear the pillar of sand it is built on will wash away with the next tide.

There are 535 members of Congress. These members, ideally, are out among the public on a regular basis. The security detail needed to prevent something like what happened to Rep. Giffords would be massive, and arguably could have a chilling effect on public interaction with their representatives (armed guards at every public Q&A town hall-type event might send the wrong message). Ultimately, you accept that as a high-profile person, there is a small but inherent risk that some nutjob is going to come shoot you up.
Also, there's the fact that as a teabagger, this guy would have complained about the cost of security if it didn't happen to be his wife getting shot.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a plain old Congressperson having a security detail at an event. A few staffers, sure, but never trained security.
Ironically, if this guy had found out Giffords *was* paying for security at events he probably would have been the first one on the internet screaming that "she's wasting tax dollars and hiding behind her goons instead of meeting the working people she steals from."

Well as it says in the Bible, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering.
Anyway I'm not sure it's being "misread". Maybe misdirected.
I mean, sure the guy's sad, but remember he went to the event to yell at his congresswoman.
He was probably pretty angry before his wife died, he'll be angry after.
