My niece visited this weekend. She wanted to watch MLP so I pulled it up on my Google TV. Got the episode, HD, played it, and that episode came up. I burst out laughing when I saw the Big Lebowski ponies, and she did not get it. It was... difficult to explain.

/I appreciate the pony fans, they're good sorts overall.
//It's one of the only kid shows I can watch with her that doesn't make me want to pull my hair out.

My son likes this show. I don't know if he is a full-on Brony (he's only thirteen,) but he says it was created by the same chick that made PowerPuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, both of which were pretty cool for being kids cartoons.

The girls at school keep sending him hand drawn pony pictures. Maybe he's using it as a gimmick to get chicks.

Count me in the same boat as you. If it was even a good children's cartoon like Adventure Time or even Powderpuff Girls (which is still a stretch) I'd understand. The show isn't good enough to warrant this brand of douchebaggery.
