I swear to god, they put him on every channel, every other damned song.

Look, I like Dave a fair bit. Under the Table is one of my go to, nothing else I want to listen to albums...but, come on. In college, everyone, EVERYONE loved DMB and it seemed like I couldn't walk from one hallway to another without hearing them. I got burned out on them and could NOT listen to them for a good 3-4 years.

That said...I hear that when they did Happy Birthday at his party it took up about 3 hours.

Same here. 12 years later and I'm still burned out on DMB. You can't make a rock, folk, acoustic or even a farking country station without them throwing on one of his overly long, self indulgent jam sessions every other damned song.

You can always tell the non-guitar fan. Too much music, too quickly, done too intricately, hurts their brain cell.
Now go listen to some rave or nice generic techno pop.

One of my first true memories of college was being in Chem 121 lab and hearing everyone talking about going to see them at Lupo's in Providence that night...and having no farking clue what they were so excited about. Because it was either one week or two before the release of Under The Table and Dreaming.

My PC class is pretty much "The Dave Matthews Band" class because of how popular he was with us.

\obviously I missed that concert
\\and Blues Traveler/Toad the Wet Sprocket later on that year
\\\did end up seeing DMB on the Before These Crowded Streets tour, with Ben Folds Five and Beck opening up for them
\fun fact: WBRU in Providence still plays the "Live at Lupo's" version of Ants Marching from time to time, with the two minute intro before the song actually starts

I have mixed feelings about Dave.

On one hand, his lyrics tend embarrassingly bad and even his good songs were way way overplayed back when he was popular (the latter isn't his fault I realize)

On the other hand, his band has some of the best musicians on the planet and his live shows are fantastic (at least the ones I saw in the 90's were). I guess it balances out - I enjoy his music but I don't actively seek it out.

2012-01-09 01:23:49 PM
Seen Dave twice. Once headlining with Ben Harper, the other time playing sans band at a Farm Aid. I enjoyed him much better without his band. They just sounded too pop oriented for my taste.

Ooba Tooba: Seen Dave twice. Once headlining with Ben Harper, the other time playing sans band at a Farm Aid. I enjoyed him much better without his band. They just sounded too pop oriented for my taste.

Back when DMB first existed (I saw them on Horde, on a bill with BT and Big Head Todd, and OPENING for Rusted Root[!]), I always thought

B>DM (Band > Dave Matthews)

I never was a huge Dave fan, but THAT was the band I wanted behind me on stage.

Then they got all poppy and coked up.

CSB:
I was sitting outside Luciano's in Pittsburgh, down the street from the Palumbo Center, where DMB was going to open for Rusted Root that night. Luciano's was a bar/espresso shop with a sidewalk thing going on. My friend Pat, who I was there with, was talking some people I didn't know. I saw, walking from downtown, a very tall black man with a CBGB's shirt on. Boyd! I said hi as he approached. He recognized me from the Horde fest that summer. (I sometimes have a very memorable appearance, moreso back in those days.) We chatted for a moment, then he asked me if I had any smoke. I said no (the truth) but that Pat could hook him up. Pat didn't recognize Boyd, and just saw a big black guy on the streets of Pittsburgh, and did NOT hook him up. I was a little buzzed and didn't realize what was happening until too late, so this is not a CSB about getting high with Boyd. Dammit.

Later on, Dave came in and bought an espresso, and even then was a complete tool.

Here's a fun experiment- make a new Pandora channel from a band with a female vocalist. EVERY SINGLE SONG that populates that channel will have a female vocalist. Doesn't matter what the seed is!

I saw Dave in concert at the Nissan Pavilion (*free tix, free ride, free beer and I still think I overpaid) and it was the perfect storm of vocal incomprehension; that place has CRAPPY acoustics and a FOH sound guy who is deaf.

/I'm sure it was a good concert if you like the his music.
