"He is a great man who risked his life to save someone he doesn't even know,"

That doesn't make you great. That makes you dumb. And probably dead.

I didn't see that part of the story explaining his history/was it a separate piece? Maybe it was someone who only drank once a week, who got wasted and fell on the tracks?

Even if he was a chronic abuser of alcohol, a more appropriate term for a newspaper would have been "intoxicated man" or "under the influence of alcohol".

Honest Bender: That doesn't make you great. That makes you dumb. And probably dead.

"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

You can argue whether they were friends, but some are more human than to live with the knowledge they could have done something to save someone and didn't.
/kudos to the rescuer
//you did well.

Some boys think like that, but some men don't.

Kurmudgeon: "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

If it was a friend I would have done whatever I had to in order to save them. Strangers can live with the consequences of their own actions.

HellRaisingHoosier: Some boys think like that, but some men don't.

You can be as idealistic as you want. But I'm willing to admit that when the shiat hits the fan, I'd rather walk away than risk serious injury for the sake of an idiot I don't know.

Most certainly not. Official NYC Tabloid Style requires usage of terms like "drunk", "souse", "lush", "soak", "alkie", "rummy", "boozehound", "wino" and "farker".

His brother is his girlfriend?

Or maybe we are just smart enough to realize that a train doesn't give a damn what your intentions were as it is turning you into paste.

I'll add that how many men fought and died for our country so that we may enjoy modern life without slavery, having to call ourselves British or learning how to goose step and speak German. How many of them have you met? I wish I could've met the relatives that died in those wars, but I am glad that their deaths kept your home safe.

Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about this. Should I LOL at him for being an idiot, or be sad that a selfless act was rewarded by a train to the head?

I think I will giggle quietly and feel bad about myself.
