It's probably a bear, but it looks like a human hand. It really does," he said.
...
He said a bear hand, although different in design, does resemble a human hand.
...
"We get these all the time, all winter long," said Walters.

Really? REALLY? A bear hand resembles a human hand THAT closely? And WTF with "we get these all the time?" What, like bears molt their god damned hands during the winter or something? There are a lot of things that are weird that happen all the time that I can accept: birds falling out of the sky, sharks shooting people with lasers. But bears with hands falling the hell off is not okay. Now all I can think about are these poor handless bears roaming the countryside, staring woefully into the river as fish swim by, unable to grab them the same way the badass handed bears do...

Seriously! I can understand that this one time, it just so happens that the way the bear claw decayed, it just so happens that it SORTA, kinda looks like a human hand. Snap a photo for your story and that is that. What's with this "happens all the time" bullshiat? And no further explanation? Yeah, I'm sure that somebody in Ohio has something better to do than to figure out how to show an image in html...

Not to take away from the humor of your post, but it's actually pretty easy to mistake a bear paw for a human hand if you're not too familiar with skeletal anatomy.

i105.photobucket.com

The metacarpals in a defleshed paw look a lot like fingers, and if it's still got some meat on it, it's hard to tell the difference.

When hunters skin bears, they usually cut the paws off to make it easier to remove the hide. They may also keep the claws as trophies, but then leave behind the bones. Dogs, raccoons and other scavengers can carry off the smaller bones and then drop them somewhere, far from the rest of the skeleton, where they are later found. Forensic techs get called out to bear paw discoveries all the time. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it's the single most commonly misidentified skeletal material.

(It's not half as funny as getting called out to a possible crime scene to see a skeleton and then having to explain to the investigating officers that humans, when they are healthy, don't typically have antlers.)

"After the bear is cleaned, the hand may get carried off by a dog or wild animal."

Happens every day here in Oakland.

How many bears are in Stark county these days? In 2009, it made the front page of the Repository that one was spotted in the county.
Have the last two years seen such an influx that their disembodied hands are littering the streets of Canton?
